Use the serial port on your laptop. It will work identically.

Powering XMDIRECT with a laptop
It is clear how to connect XMD1000 for control, I am wondering how to connect the power.
Does the serial port provide power just like the USB?
I thought i either needed to use some sort of 12v power source.
Thanks,
t.

You need a 12v power source which is indicated in the diagram in the tutorial. You can get this from an external source or from a molex connector from the power supply of the computer.

What he means is, where can he get 12v from a laptop. You can't get it from the PSU and it doesn't have molex plugs. He will have to get a 12v source from somewhere in the car or a 12v battery pack.

Jason,
thanks for understanding. I though i was going a little crazy.
Basically, I will need to run 12v power to the laptop in the trunk and I should find a way to run the same power to the XMD1000 in the dash?
Does anyone know if there is a premade cord available that hacks XMD with the proper output? Or if it is best to buy a MOLEX-"Something" connector?
Thanks a lot,
t.

Nooooo. You need to run 12v to the XMD1000. Why would your laptop need the power?
Hint: your car operates on 12 volts of power. Try tapping off of a cigarette lighter, or the headunit power source to feed the XMD1000.

I have a hacked up cigarette-lighter-type adaptor for mine. It actually lets you pick the voltage (ranges from 1.5 to 12), so I have mine set to 12. I didn't want to hook the XMD unit straight to the bbattery for fear of power spikes, etc. This adaptor has a built in fuse also.
My suggestion is to find a cigarette lighter adaptor that provides 12v with atleast 300ma (mine is 500ma). Hack off the end and solder on a pos and neg wire to power it from a power source (mine is hooked up to a power distribution block).
Do not over power the XMD unit, or you may fry it.

Hook the XM Direct adapter directly to the Car's 12v. It can be unregulated. That's what it's designed for.

If you're that concerned about powering the XMD1000 then get yourself an XM Commander instead. They are identical, function-wise, but the Commander comes with a separate power connector for 12V constant, ACC, and ground. As an added benefit, it can also be used stand alone with the provided Commander head unit and outputs to a wired FM transmitter.
Price is the same so your choice.
