97 Prelude rear speakers problem

i installed my carputer in my prelude, i used the lilliput touchscreen motorized monitor with built in radio and audio output (4x45 watts output). before my rear speakers work, now they dont work at all, i saw a black box about 3"x5" that is attached in the trunk close to the rear speakers, my hunch is its an oem amplifier for the rear speakers since the speaker wires goes out from the black box wiring and goes to my speakers. anybody can confirm what that thing is? anybody have a solution why i my speakers stopped working? thanks

Yes, your prelude has an external factory amplifier for the rear speakers. I can't be positive what kind of signal that the amplifier would be expecting but it is probably just a low-level "pre-out" signal around 2-4 volts. Make sure you are not sending a high-level or speaker-level signal to the rear. A wiring diagram might help you to double check your connections.

Here is the wiring diagram for your 97 Honda Prelude:

rewire the rear speakers is your best bet. get rid of the stock amp. there garbage. i would run new speaker wire to the front of if you can tone out the leads going to the amp that would work too.

thanks for the advice, i would prefer to keep the setup though without having to run new wires. how would i test the rear speakers if they are getting any signal? also if someone can give me the reason to the ryme, im using the lilliput touchscreen vga indash motorized screen, it has stock 4x45watts audio output just like a normal stereo deck, before when i started testing it, when i use the radio, all 4 speakers worked but when i use the computer mode, i only get the 2 front speakers to work. Now the rear speakers dont work at all and when i use the radio i get 2 front speakers working, but as of yesterday, when i use computer mode, i only get 1 speaker working (front right). this is really frustrating, i took out the harness and soldered all of them just to make sure nothing is loose, but still no luck. is there a setting for this coz i cannot find it. any advice? thanks

Check Fuse #5. This the fuse for the rear amplifier. It is located under the dashboard on the driver's side.

Another item to note. I beleive that the factory amplifier requires a LOW-LEVEL audio signal input. It sounds to me like you are sending it a HIGH-LEVEL audio signal off of your "4x45 watt output" stereo/screen device.

There is a chance that a high-level signal is required, but probably not. In fact, you might have already damaged your factory amplifier by sending it such a high powered audio signal. Either way, if you aren't sure, it is safer to start with a low-level signal first.

Good Luck.

Ok, so when you put your old Kenwood back in, all the speakers worked? If so then nothing is damaged.

The signal from the headunit area is of course fine then and the problem is between the computer and the cabling getting it to the good wires.

If it only comes out of the front passenger then it could be that the wire you are using to get from the 1/8" jack to the RCA is faulty.

Also check the software side. Check your mobo's sound output to see if the balance is offset to one side. Also make sure that if you have it set to mono or stereo. If it is mono, then one will not work. If you plug in regular speakers to the computer, does it come out both or just one?

the indash lilliput that i bought has a built in radio, tv and video outputs aside from the vga, when im not using the carputer (which is the only one that uses the 1/8" jack) and just the radio i get the same result, only the 2 front speakers work, i checked the balance and fade and they are set correctly. when i plug in regular speakers to the carputer, both speakers work. are the signals from the 4x45 watts speaker output from the lilliput (or any deck for that matter) different from each other? like what would happen if i switched the front speaker connections to the rear speaker connections? are the front speakers the high level and the rear speakers low level or are they all the same even if i interchanged the connections? i know i got them correctly because when i used the balance and fade function, when i fade it to the front, the front speakers work and when i fade to the rear, then i dont hear anything. how do you send those low level signals? it just doesnt make sense to me, help. thanks

Can you tell us exactly how your kenwood head unit was hooked up? Perhaps a picture? A picture of the working kenwood wiring would be very helpful.

Switching the outputs of lilliput, front to back, is a good idea. Go ahead and try that and tell us what happens.

thanks i will try that tomorrow, maybe i will start with switching the front speaker to the back, what do you think? will this make any difference or reversing the wiring on my kenwood deck and see what it does, is this gonna damage my car speakers or amp?

I wouldn't worry about switching anything on the kenwood deck. Just switch the outputs of the lilliput front to rear, and rear to front. The front and rear outputs should be identical, so there's nothing to worry about. Try that and get back to us. Also a picture or a really good explanation of your kenwood wiring would be great.

Peace.

Just a quick guess here...

Did you connect the remote turn-on signal..?? It should be a blue wire from the radio, and also one on the adapter.. I installed a Pioneer in my friends CL using the stock amplifier, I assumed the stock amp worked by ignition, but it was controlled by the turn on.. You have remember that aftermarket companies make OEM radios, hehe... Your Kenwood probably has the blue wire connected and that is why it works..

Lataz...

good point jbeckford1 but i checked the kenwood deck and im sure the blue wires were never connected. i am thinking that maybe the rear outputs from the lilliput are busted? is there a way to figure that out like a fuse or something? or do you have to crack it open?
