stupid speaker question.

My 96 Civic has 15w nominal, 30w peak speakers in it. I have a pair of Kenwoods that fit nicely, but they're 50w nominal, 250w max. I'm pushing it out of the stock head unit because it sounds fine. What problems will I run into if I swap the speakers? Should I sell them and invest in lower power speakers?

they will probably work ok, & it'll probably sound better than the stock ones, but the speakers won't see there real potential until run with a bit more power...

anything even remotely decent will probably start in the 35-50wrms range... I doubt you'll find anything that is optimised for less that can be considered an upgrade..

they'll be ok...

if you are looking for new speakers then you should look for something that is very efficient. i think infinity is well known for that. (or a horn driver ;-) )

Replace the stocker with a $150 model if you're not lookin to spend much and you'll get a LOT more out of your aftermarket speakers. Panasonic, Alpine, Pioneer, Clarion are all good brands. For $150 you can even get a good mid-line MP3 deck.

If you've got a keyless entry system you've gotta either relocate the factory radio behind the cupholders in the front and use a T-harness or lose factory keyless.

Huh?......Since when did you have to do this? Is this for certain cars? I have never encountered this.

No, that generation Civic is notorious for locating the door lock sensor in the stereo. Mine, fortunately and unfortunately doesn't have keyless entry.

The information I was looking for was regarding the amount of power the stock unit puts out. I'd also like to know if there is a preamp out in the back (though I really doubt it). What keeps me from going and finding out myself is the long procedure for getting into the back of the console; they didn't make it easy with this particular model.

check with pac-audio and see if they sell an interface for that car and year. if they do, then you know you can stop your searching and you also have a solution. usually pac has some sort of adapter to get pre-outs on stock radio's if it's possible

94-97 Civic with factory installed keyless has the keyless receiver built into the radio.

94-97 civics need 8 screws removed, and 2 8mm bolts for the radio to be removed. There's no preouts on the radio, you can tag the speakers at the rear deck for use with a line level converter. The stock radio outputs probably on the average of 5-8WRMS

Edit: receiver's built into the little black box that says "Viper" on the outside that's sitting on the shelf at Tweeter.

most aftermarket radios put out about 15-17wrms so the stock one should atleast put out around 10wrms
