LONG: Start guide to get multichannel sound for MP3, DVD, SAT, etc.?

I'd appreciate input into a thread I've started to try to get some idea of how to consistently ensure multichannel sounds from a variety of formats with the different hardware people use most commonly. My primary issue is that my Sirius source audio isn't converted to multichannel sound like the other inputs. It may be a RoadRunner issue, but I've volunteered to take any major themes that develop from the responses and try to make a brief guide to help everyone get multichannel sound licked. The thread is here:

Thanks for the encouragement, GTI! There has been significantly less response in the thread... I am going to try to take what is in there, anyway, and at least boil it down to "educated guesses". Most of my setup (and my experience with variations on my setup) seems to be working great except for the Sirius audio only coming out of the centers. The solution to that MAY be tied to references to the "line in plugin" or Winamp plugin. I am gonna start messing more with that and I'll let keep you posted.
