Image Dynamics IDMAX 12

Ok I have a question...

I had plans to mount my IDMAX in the side pocket of my trunk in a sealed fiberglass enclosure...

I was reffering to this chart...

My question is, if instead of mounting this sub normally in the same sealed enclosure, if I were to reverse mount it in the same enclosure, would this be any different from mounting it the normal way in the box? I believe this would be called using an infinite baffle?

Basically the sub would be mounted like these in this post...

http://mp3car.com/vbulletin/showpost...9&postcount=15

The IDMAX website says it can use an infinte baffle mount.

And if I were to invert the sub the air space in the actual enclosure i built would not matter becuase the sub is using my trunk as the box... correct?

No, that wouldn't be infinite baffle. That would just be inverted mounting.

your sub takes a certain amount of litres, so when you invert it you'll need a smaller box.

No.

Ok I just read about the infinite baffle and I think I understand the difference.

So in order for what im talking about to work (inverted sub), the enclosure would still have to be the size that it asks for on the information sheet for a sealed enclosure?

Yes. The advantage to running an inverted driver is there's no displacement in the enclosure from the motor and basket. You just have to decrease the volume of the enclosure by the amount of driver displacement and then half of the driver displacement. This will take care of the extra air between the cone and the baffle.

I see. Now this makes sense.

So let me see if this is right? an infinite baffle, at least from what i've read and the examples i've looked at. There is nothing sealing up the sub, its pretty much "open" at both ends right? I think they also refer to it as free-air?

So if its asking for 1.3 cu. ft. for a sealed enclosure, then for an invert mount

I subtract the displacement which is .12 cu. ft. and then take an addional .06 cu. ft. which will give me the amount i need to decrease it by.

Infinite Baffle and free air are totally different. Infinite baffle is where two parts of the car are sealed off from one another by a baffle and the speaker is on that baffle.

You're right about neeting to subtract .18 cuft. This isn't exact, but it's good enough.

Oh ok, well I'll see what route I decide to take... which will most likely be the sealed route. I'm going to do more reading on this infinite baffle and freeair business.. But I think i have an understanding of the infinite baffle now that you put it in those terms.

Thanks again shadow.
