need help, no sound through nano-itx
Hi !!!
i've build a carpc with the epia-n motherboard... everything is working fine except i get no sound, nor any noice through the speakers in car...
i made the case myself and running the onboard ac-97 audio to my car stereo... everything is tested and works fine, sound is playing and no errors inside the comp (newest drivers etc) and it works great... hooking up a laptop to my car stereo and it plays fine through my setup in car
but no sound when i plug my car-stereo to my onboard audio car pc ???
this is getting so annoying... any ideas, help suggestions are welcome
there must be something i've overlooked as i want to test it all before i return it cause of faulty... if anyone haven't had sound and made it work pls post !!!
very many thx

If you plug headphones into the Nano, do you have sound? I guess you are running Windows, how is output configured? Line out, 5.1, etc.? I have a Nano, but am running Linux and have not had any problems bench testing, but have not completed my car install.

no sound even with headphones... tested
im running xp sp2 and currently only configured as 2-speakers, using the green jack... no other and no other config problems, everything checked
still no sound... is there a chance any ports should be grounded individually to chassi ??? wild speculations... but seeing it plays fine but not hearing anything leaves me thoughtless... ?!
but way good you have nano too... hard to find these users :P i have another question regarding this board... the frontpanel connector... driving me nuts, i have pwr button cables and power led cables and hdd led cables... all + and -
the manual only says pin 1-12 right ??? and im wondering on which pin should the pwr button + be and its - and pwr_led + and its - and hdd_led its + and - be connected ?
if you tell me your pins you've connected i will be glad to check im on my way... and also have you connected a pc-speaker to your nano ??? wild guess but trying all else i wonder if it has to be connected in order to get the onboard audio to work... thinking ground issues or circuits... pls write again !!!
my specs:
VIA EPIA N 10000 Nano-ITX
512 MB RAM DDR400
SLOT-IN DVD
80 GB SATA HDD
WINXP SP2
BU-353 USB GPS
Custom built case housing it all :P

The plug you should be testing is the one on the left (looking at the back of the board). Not sure of color. From left to right, line-out, line-in, microphone. So it could be a driver issue if you can't get sound at all out of the board. Have you tried changing the setup to four speaker, 5.1, etc. just to test?
If that doesn't work and you have time/resources, download a live Linux ISO and burn it to test sound under Linux. Even a small distro like DSL recognized the equipment and produced sound on my board. It doesn't install anything so it won't hurt your current install.
As for wiring:
HDD LED = 2&4
Power button = 6&8
Power LED = 3&5
Reset button = 10&12
Case speaker should be 11&7 (I think)
I have only used power and reset buttons.
Front Panel Connector:
12 | * | * | 11
10 | * | x | 09
08 | * | * | 07
06 | * | * | 05
04 | * | * | 03
02 | * | * | 01
1 = +5v dual
2 = +5v
3 = +5v dual
4 = HD LED
5 = -PLED
6 = Power Btn
7 = +5v
8 = GND
9 = N/A
10 = Reset Switch
11 = Speaker
12 = GND
I have not tried a case speaker as my board is mounted in my console, no case.

ok here's the finals... i tried DSL and it produced no sound through my onboard connector, either its faulty or im missing something... as i've done my case on my own it might be some grounding issues... as patience flew by pretty quickly i bought an usb-soundcard and it worked like a charm right out of the box though only negative it steals one usb-port...
the computer is almost done, it works and do as i tell her... only missing wifi antennas and extra usb-ports and a top cover... i made the top cover solid and gosh it hot inside !!! need to vent it by cutting up the sides... alt. install a case fan... dont wanna burn this puppy
walstib, your setup is lóoking awesome man... just viewed your worklog keep it up !!! or is it finished by now ???
here's a pic on my carputer...

Bummer about the sound card. Are you going to RMA it?
Still waiting on my harness cable... It should have shipped today. I'm getting impatient! I did get an Atheros minipci wi-fi card with the AR5212A chipset, so I will be installing it and some antenneas soon. I'm wondering how hot my console will get since the HDD will be in the smaller compartment abve with the DVD drive. I may end up routing a tube from my A/C to the console. The rear outputs are directly under the front seats, so it would only be a 2' run.

i really should RMA it, but considering it took weeks to get it... i live in Sweden, and sending it back and get a new one... well i should but the wait would kill me will think it over...
and the onboard sound chips aren't the best on market either so i can live with having sound through usb, it doesn't show or anything...
as for you, i've tested it alot... and HDD and DVD is no concern as they produce very little heat, prime concern would be the board itself as the heatsink made of alu leads away alot of heat... it gets hot to say the least, routing a tube from the A/C is a brilliant solution as it also have crossed my mind ;-) you should make that... saves alot of headache later on
what harness cable do you mean your waiting for ??? power between car and computer ???
i think i've heard that wifi-card name before... hmmm better for wardriving or monitoring air packets :P ???
forums in general sucks on showing pics... i'll edit the last post putting links instead as they work
peace and lets me know how things turn out for your setup

I had a simular problem with the sound plug, it was loose and had a lot of static when playing. I added a USB 2.0 card to the pci slot and now I use usb for sound, gps, wi-fi, ect, all work fine.

I found a place that supplies the harness to Clarion for the CD changer I removed. This way I will be able to terminate the carputer (audio) wiring to the harness and then plug the entire unit into the head unit and not have to cut & splice wires. That will help if I ever sell the car. I can put the changer back and it will plug right in. It will also expose the steering wheel controls which I may look at doing something with. Right now, they will control volume and radio on head unit, when PC is selected as input, they will control only volume, so I may be able to use them for fast forward, rewind, etc.
The wifi card has good output (250 mW, I think) and fully spported under Linux with netstumbler, swscanner, etc. for war driving. Hook it up to one of these and I should be set.

Hey Nomad,
The problem is the Nano board has only one slot and it is a miniPCI slot. But there are 4 USB 2.0 ports. I am running my HDD, GPS and touchscreen through USB.
