No PCMCIA but it does have {One 32-bit PCI slot supports 2 bus master PCI via riser card, and 2 x Mini-PCI} So I guess a Soundblaster Audigy2 ZS sound card won't fit?? I wonder if there's a mini PCI sound card out there with Tos-Link?

I happen to stumble upon this - Creative AUDIGY 2 ZS PLATINUM SOUND BLASTER PCI SOUND CARD SB0350 here; http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_t...terid=1145294/
The thing is, I can't find that specific model on the Creative/Soundblaster sites anywhere. Is this something new and will this work with my mobo?

you don't want to put a head unit anywhere but you're going to find somewhere to put that?

It's not even a fullsize head unit! It's only an inch or so thick!

I had no idea it came with a front panel also. A 2 piece kit?
It seems that I'm chasing my tail here. The onboard 5.1 is not oh so great by reviews and has S/PDIF Out but no Toslink Out. To upgrade to a better soundcard I'd need something like the Audigy2 ZS Platinum that has Toslink Out. But in that process I've gained an extra piece of unwanted hardware. That front panel (second piece) does not need to be located on the center console but can remain near the PC itself .... right. The occasional adjustment may be required from time to time but not as active part of the listening process. In other words set to a specific (sweet spot) setting ... right?
So, should I look at something else?

There's tos-link out on that board. It's the square plugs. You remove them then you've got an optical signal.
I think you might need to sit down and think out EXACTLY what you want with this system.
I thought you had said earlier that you didn't want to do 5.1 any more, now I'm seeing that it looks like you want to still do it?
Do you have room for a full PCI card? btw - that mobo that you have chosen has a tos-link port on it.
If you want 5.1 I'd go from that into a processor (alpine or the like).

Why doesn't that webpage list it's got a freakin TOSLINK? If you look really hard at the small picture you can see the optical out to the right of the regular 1/8" plugs

because S/PDIF is often used to denote all optical signals...be it RCA or Tos-Link
I remember I made a thread discussing this very topic a while back...it's quite annoying really...they all just assume that if you can interchange the two I guess....
