Help finding aux input adaptor for Monsoon 98 Firebird

Looking to create my own carputer. I've got the case & mini-itx board, etc. I've done some research and come to a conclusion I'll need an aux input. (duh) Looks as theres a 9pin connector that basically cuts my CD player to whatever I hook it up to. I've been looking for adaptors and.....

3. 1995 thru 1999 AM/FM/CD radios are NOT CD changer capable, and will not work with the GM9-AUX.

I guess this is me? I have a '98 Firebird with the Monsoon equiped. In deck single CD player, no casette player. Do I need a different adaptor or will no adaptor work with my deck?

I'd rather not change out my Monsoon either, if thats the first thing thats gonna get suggested :P

Well, if there was no cd-changer option for that radio, and no CD / AUX button (or a button having either label), or a 'tape' button for an external tape deck, i'd say there's no other option other than opening the deck and soldering in a solution.

Any pics of the radio?

after messing with gm radio input, i finnally went with a headunit-less install..... i just went in with an aftermarket amp straight from my via epia. i know its more expensive, but you can save some time and money by dropping your GM head unit....... GM makes that interface such a pain

i had a '01 sunfire, with a gm-12 and gm -24 plugs on it and none of the adapter i bought worked with it..

good luck

There is a CD / Play button on it. I'll post a picture in an hour or so, charging batteries right now. Could the "CD" mean cd changer and "Play" mean the single cd player?

Here it is...

Think it would work or not?

Edit: I'm finding conflicting information - can anybody confirm??
Quote:
All 98-02 F-bodies with Monsoon systems came pre-wired for the changer as standard equipment (not an option code).

Quote:
The changer will work with any 00-02 monsoon cd receiver. It will not work on 98 monsoon cd receivers, but on some later year 99 monsoons.

They were talking about putting a changer in a stock monsoon (single cd) unit, I'd just be putting an aux input instead of a changer...

Edit#2: BLAH! Looks like theres no possible aux input for pre 99 monsoon systems...I'll have to hardwire a FM modulator or buy a new monsoon headunit....

If I buy a 1999+ monsoon unit from a pontiac will it be a straight change? Same wiring harness, etc? Plug n play?

Here is the Radio Wiring Diagram for you 1998 Pontiac Firebird with the Monsoon Audio System.

1998PontiacFirebirdMonsoonAudio.pdf

It appears that there is at least a connection for a "CD Changer / Remote Playback Device - if equipped".

The diagram shows 3 connections on the back of the radio - A 10pin, a 15pin and a 20pin connector. I would take a look at the back of the radio to see if you have these 3. If so then you might have a shot at making your own adapter. It could be simple because there doesn't appear to be any data lines.

It does seem weird that there is no control wires to the Changer though - only power, ground, accessory, and audio. There should be some kind of interface to control choosing discs, tracks, and ff/rewind. Maybe it wasn't designed for a changer after all.

Peace.

I would check say ls1tech.com or firebirdv6.com fullthrottlev6.com for a used 99+ HU BEFORE I called GM. They are several hundred new I do believe. You should be able to pick up a unit for under 75 from one of those places man. Hey also you have a 98 firebird, cool man. If you want tubular manifolds from a 2001 camero let me know. I just bought a new engine and it came with a pair. Same bolt up patterns. It's 99+ that can use the gm-9 aux input, just fyi.

**EDIT I have a 98 firebird also and the harness and wireouts for the cd changer can be found under your back driver side enclosure. Its got some tabs holding it in place but those other plastic things slide right out. HOWEVER the gm-9 will not work for a 98 HU. I have no controls for the changer either and its always baffled me a bit, I have the steering wheel controls but no disc change possiblities. Must not have been fully implimented in the 98 packages. Just like the straight TB.
