I'll said what I said in another thread:

In previous years, Eclipse used upwards of 5 servos on their head units. These servos adjusted based on the temperature and the thickness of the disk they were reading. They were virtually skip proof. In fact, some sales people were known to have drilled a few 1/8" holes through the disks and still play them without any skipping or missing thanks to Eclipses error correction algorithm and these servos.

Also, previously they had one of the best CD transports on the market. Now they are using a much, much lower quality DVD transport.

Quality isn't what sells any more. Pretty flashy spinny buzzy boppy things sell.

That's true, I have a 8454 I refuse to part with for that reason. Its the last model before they became shinny. And now that they've sold out Best Buy, crutchfield, etc they only offer a 1 year warranty.

That being said what would replace them with? I agree with you that there quality isn't what it use to be but who's is?

Alpine HU's are good if you get the PXA-H701 to go with them.

Pioneer's P9 Combo.

Clarion DRZ9925 (I think that's the model - it's their top of the line)

Nakamichi, Denon, and McIntosh are supposed to be good, although I don't have any experience with them. Also the Ural CCD (Now a Helix unit I beleive) was supposed to be good.

Nakamichi went down hill years ago.

The Alpines with that slide controller work incredibly well with the iPod.
