Anyone use power reducers from amped headunits?

I've got an 06 Ford explorer with the "audiophile" audio system and am considering upgrading the speakers and amps. I'm to understand that I need to reduce the amplified power coming from the radio in order to then feed it into a stand alone power amplifier. I've seen a few of these devices and wanted to get some feedback on how well these things work.

Has anyone used such a device? Is it stanard fair in the upgrade market and finally how does it affect the sound of the system? I'm using a Ford OEM Pioneer AVIC headunit which supposidly makes 290W of power but I've yet to figure out how that's divied up since the door speakers say 25W on the back!!! The car has 4 door speakers and a sub. I was thinking 50x4+90 for the sub until I saw the rating on the door speaker (which is a 4 1/2 cone and a seperate tweeter in a plastic box that fits into a 6x8 encosure).

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Roveer
