Car Pc and car stereo

Sorry guys!

I'm thinking of building a car pc, and throwing out my in-dash cd-player.

How is the sound when i'm using the pc's dvd player?
do I get the same sound as with the "old" cd-player?

What is the best sound-card to use?
I't would be great to have 7.1 surround when watching dvd's, but when listening to music I want to have stereo sound (with possibilities to fade the sound front and rear), just like with the old in-dash player.

As you prob figured out, I'm a newbie lol

Man, you are going to get flamed for asking basic questions without searching. Here, I'll throw you a bone.

Unless you're going to be competing I think the sound from the pc will be good enough if not better than your old cd player right from the start. Add a basic sound card (Soundblaster Live) and you'll be good. As for fading the sound you should be able to accomplish this through the software that came with your soundcard. I have an aftermarket radio with aux input so my headunit handles that. Good Luck and Welcome

There is lots of information on this forum. Some of what you are asking are right here on the first page in the Car Audio sub forum so you won't have to look so far. Glad to see you are joining the carpc world. Once you go carputer, you will never want to go back to a plain old head unit.

Added: Be sure to look in FAQ subforum.
