blowing stock speakers

hi. i have stock speakers and am in the planning stage for my carpc still. if i have a 280watt alpine 4/3/2 amp with the model #3527v, will i blow my stock speakers? i read the faq on stereo connecting. would i be able to just connect one set of rca plugs and it work? thanks, daniel.

You will probably blow your stock speakers. The vast majority of stock speakers aren't designed to accept the wattage of an aftermarket amplifier.

My rear speakers are stock and I have a 150x4 alpine amp. My microphone turned on for about 10 seconds, so there was major feedback and it got loud. By the time I muted it.... I smelt something burnt. I believe it was my rear speakers

. They still work... sorta.

I have a 2003 Nissan Xterra XE. The SE Model is the one with the aux port and the nice rockford fosgate sound system

. I'm fairly new to this so what would you guys suggest I do? Here's my plan so far:

-Stock speakers(I guess I'll have to replace these)
-OPUS 150w PSU - $140
-Old Computer(400mhz 96mb 8gb) - free
-280 Watt Alpine Amp - free
-Palm Vx(to control mp3s) - free
-mp3car 3.5mm to RCA cable adapter: $8(would i need 2 of these and a y-splitter for the sound card, or could i just use one of them? i'm clueless when it comes to this stuff. the amp is 4/3/2.)
Power inverter(for palm pda) - (about $30 ebay?)

Stereo cables to buy:
-Power(amp to battery) : $$$?
-Power(OPUS to battery?): $$$?

Budget: $220(will slowly increase more as time goes on and i pay more of my car note off, at which time it will greatly increase)
-OPUS($140)
-3.5mm to RCA Cables($8?)
-Power inverter for palm(??$30??)
Money Left: $42

Can it be done? Is it logicial? Will $42 in speakers sound like crap? Should I just wait until the speakers blow then upgrade them? Should I just buy $21/speaker for fronts and upgrade rears later?

I've been reading a lot and learned about the computer side but have been trouble finding things on car audio since I'm very unfamiliar with it.

My carputer is going to be a slow building project as i receive more money to put into it. I am debt free aside from my car note(about $2500 left

) and would like to keep it that way.

OS - TinyXP
Programs running at beginning: Winamp(instead of Windows Shell)
Time from boot until playing music: 55s

Future - Lilliput, GPS, FM Radio, Bluetooth phone control, Wi-fi card
(After I get my carpc set up I'll sell my Garmin iQue M5 PDA/w GPS for some cash to get more carpc components.)

i'd just save your money and replace the speakers after you blow them. 42 will get you crap. make sure to set your gains correctly and keep the volume down. you should be good for a while.

I too was very new to the car audio scene. After installing my own, Id have to agree with scott. It will take a lot of volume to smoke up your speakers. BTW my stock garb speakers are rated for 17.5 watts (printed on the back). My amp does 150 per channel.

Wait for your budget to increase, good components = good sound.

Alright.. thanks guys. That sounds good. When it does increase, I was thinking about getting some off of ebay. Good or bad choice? What brands are usually good/bad? All I really know is that Dual sucks and you get what you pay for. What kind of speakers do you guy shave and how do they sound?

The Xterra comes stock with two 6.5's on driver/passenger doors, two 6x9's in the cargo area, and 2 tweeters. i would like to fab two more 6.5's in the back seat doors and replace the 6x9's in the cargo area with subs.

Remember to tune your amps. That will be your saving grace for those stock speakers.

for a quality inexpensive speaker i'd look into cdt or elemental designs (if you go with Elemental designs join icixsound.com and you will get a forum discount on some of thier products. cdt has an authorized ebay store and you can get some great deals on b-stock items. such as:

another choice is going fully active and forgetting about rear speakers. then you can get into some home audio drivers and could possibly save a grip of cash if you have the correct x-over ability in your soundcard or amps.
