lunapark: It should work fine but I’m not sure of the level of display you would get, on that unit you may only get the 'USB T001' type of display, I’m going to look into that one when I have the time.

I would have had some video up sooner but my camera is playing up, maybe in the next 24 hours or so.

The 15000 file limit is probably due to memory constraints in the IC that drives the system, its a Telechips IC that is probably used by quite a few manufacturers. I have found that when using a HDD with a lot of files causes quite a delay before playback starts, that may be due to the pre-production unit that I have.

I recently installed this. I have a DEH-P860MP hu. The install is a breeze. Just a ground and constant power. The usb that you are using MUST be FAT. I have a 60 gig HDD that I had to re-format into two partitions in order for this to work. One word of advice, Win XP can only format FAT with a size smaller than 32 gig. Anything larger has to be NTFS and this unit does NOT recognize it. Also a word of caution, you CANNOT partition the drive. Example, 60 gig HDD formated 32 gig FAT and 28 NTFS. The unit will not recognize. If you have something small that 32 gig you're fine over that, in order to format you need either a computer running Win 98 SE or get (or find) a program called Partition Magic. You can however format a drive larger into 32 gig FAT and leave the remaining portion unallocated. With most Pioneer units, you CAN get Artist, Track, or Folder name to be displayed. There is a Scroll feature, scan (which give a 10 sec preview of each track), track forward and back. Fast forward and back. It really is a neat unit. It's nice to have all my music in one spot. Let me know if I can help any further with this.

It works with ALL pioneer head units with a P-Bus connection and this is denoted by the P in the model name....


DEH - CD Head unit

P - It has a P-Bus connection

MP - Added functions ( in this case it will play MP3 from CDR and CDRW disks)

I have just bought a CD-UB100 to use with an old head unit: the Premier DEH-P920R. I can confirm that with this unit the only names that get displayed are F001, F002, etc for the folders and T001, T002, etc for the tracks, because this is exactly what I got when I used a pendrive (1GB).

Now, making it work with an USB HDD is another story.

I tried to use two different 2.5" USB enclosures and had no success with them. One enclosure was simply not recognized by the CD-UB100 (NODEVICE message appears). The other enclosure is apparently recognized but it displays a "READING" message forever.

kingchicken: Have you succeed using your CD-UB100 unit with an USB HDD? Could you please detail exactly what HDD you're using, how it was formatted as well as the manufacture date of your CD-UB100?

Pioneer Man: I saw your post saying that when we connect a large HDD it can take a while for it to be up and running. Then I was wondering if I should wait a little bit more for the "READING" message to go away. Do you have and idea of how long it can take for an HDD to be recognized? Do you think this could have anything to do with the fact that I'm using an old head unit to control it?

I'm using a 2.5" 80GB notebook HDD formatted with a single FAT32 primary partition in an USB enclosure. My CD-UB100 unit manufacture date is November 2006.

Hi everybody! I'm a newbie here...I'm from italy (so excuse me for my very bad english!) and last year i bought a pioneer avic hd1bt. Since I read about the adaptor CD-UB100, and reading through this forum, I would be very interested on the possibility of connecting my head unit to an hdd external (bigger than 100Gb) through this adaptor.I know that my headunit's back has "ip-bus" connections so it should works...but I'm really interested on the possibility of connecting my usb hard drive to it in order to get a real "music library". And also..my head unit has an internal 30Gb hdd..In this hdd 10Gb are dedicated to the navigation software and the head unit general software; the remaining 20Gb are dedicated to a music library...well..I'd also like to be able to change THIS hdd with a bigger one..but I only know that it's a 1,8"inches hdd......so..please..HELP ME!!!!!
PS: for pioneerman: I've tried to download the owner's manual from the pioneer website...unfortunately I'm registered @ the ITALIAN pioneer website..so I can't log in the english (I guess american) download section of this website..know any solutions?

I have a premier DEH-P740MP. It has always changed MP3 tracks very slow but CD tracks are instant. How fast is the UB100 for changing tracks?

Since my headunit display supports MP3 ID3 tag info would the song, track artist info show up from the UB100?

Hello people,

I thought I made the right choice by not buying the iPod. Wanting the AVIC-D3, I almost ended up buying it to listen to my 50+Gig collection. I thought the CD-UB100 was an easy solution. I purchased an iOmega 80Gig silver series portable HDD that does not even require external power.

Now the problems with the D3 and the UB100


- The interface is ascetic and bland. It is not clear. Buttons are labeled F1 F2 etc. I didn't know what to do.
- Poring through the manual, I realized that it does not give you the option of folder navigation. It starts from the first folder, calls it #1 and goes through all your folders. Mine ended around Folder #734. It doesn't make any sense. Besides printing a detailed map of all my folders following the numbering scheme, I would have no idea how to access a particular folder.
- The names are just 8 measly characters. It does not help AT ALL.


I am very disappointed with this unit. Extremely disappointed. I have a good mind of taking the dealer's kind words of swapping this for the iPod interface if I wanted and probably buying a second hand iPod. Anyone have suggestions, insights, future updates, firmware updates, hacks? If you have a huge collection, I definitely, STRONGLY do not recommend this product.

I am really interesting in your feedback as I have the same deck and I am looking at getting the CD-UB100. There are lots of mentions in this thread about how the navigation and display is done, what I would like to know is how it works with the DEH-P860MP.

1. Do the folder names show correctly?
2. Do nested folders work (eg. \Dance\Ministry Annual\Disc 1\)?
3. Do the file names scroll like they do if you are using a CD of mp3 files?
4. Do the ID3 tags show up?

My expectation is this unit would function in the same way as when inserting a cd of mp3's, it would be disappointing if it didn't.

I just hooked it up to my P3700MP, but according to the manual navigation is similar between the two head units.


1. Yes, if you set it to display folder names
2. Yes, I think it claims up to eight levels will work. I haven't personally gone beyond two or three though.
3. Not on mine. The first eight characters are displayed, then you have to hit the function key and then (in your case) press and hold multi-control until the title begins to scroll.
4. Yes, you can set the display to folder name, file name, song title, album, all of the options available on an mp3 cd.


I had the same expectation, and was slightly disappointed. If you switch folders on an mp3 cd, the folder name and then the song name will scroll once. With the CD-UDB100 you set the display to one of the IDE tags, and then it will always display that information for the current song. You have to press function and then multi-control to get the current information to scroll once.

There's also a ~45 second delay on mine from when you first turn on your vehicle until music starts to play. However I usually switch to the radio during this time and switch back after a minute or so. There isn't any delay switching between sources once that initial minute is up.

There also isn't any quick way to scroll to a particular folder, kind of a hassle when you want to listen to folder 120 or so.

I felt these were fairly minor inconveniences though, outweighed by having 120 gigs of space for music.

If you're still unsure, order from Crutchfield. Not only is there no restocking fee if returned within 30 days, but they include pre-paid return shipping labels. The only thing you'd lose is ~10 dollars in initial shipping.

I'm looking into purchasing a pioneer DEH-P590IB, which comes with an IBus. According to the product description:

the "iBus" iPod Direct Control provides fast, easy control and playback of your iPod through the DEH-P490IB. Once connected to the included cable, you can control your iPod through the headunit and even view album, artist, and other music info on its display.

Great, that's what I want.......so why am I being told this?:

After purchasing the optional cable (UB100), you can easily connect and enjoy the cool tunes in your iPod without adding another unit that has to be installed.

Look, all I want to do is connect, control, power, charge & play my Ipod thru my headunit. Will the included iBus do the trick or do I also have to purchase the UB100 adapter?

ok, i have a pioneer premier DEH-P7800MP (sometimes called DEH-P780MP) and i was wondering if it would show me folder names with the head unit i have. I have thousands of MP3's and it would be amazing to be able to hook up a drive with all of them on it. Thanks!
