Carputer instead of Head Unit

it seems like this would be a pretty common question, but I didn't see it in any of the FAQs, and couldn't think of a good search term to get me the answer...

anyway, I'm looking to use my carputer to play mp3s through the stock speakers. with no head unit. now, I'm not looking for a window-rattling powerhouse of a stereo, just stock quality is fine (I've currently got a $50 AIWA head unit and stock speakers....it's fine).

now, can I just wire the speakers right to the stereo output on the computer's audio card? or do I need some sort of amplification. if so, what's a good option?

I'd really like to put an easy fader/balance control in the dash, a little joystick like some older caravans had would be sweet....any ideas there?

I realize I could just use a cheap head unit like the one I have, and hook the comp's output right to the head unit's aux input....but I'd rather skip that step if possible

if there is a good write-up or thread that you know of that covers these questions...I'd really appreciate a link.

thanks!

Don't think it's a good idea to run the installed speaker directly on the comps output. The comp don't have enough power... hmm.. Depends thou, if you have only two speakers it might work fine, but I wouldn't bet any money on it.
You're better of running a small amp.

get a descent 4 channel amp to run your stock speakers off of.. if you want comparable performance to your headunit you'll want something of same wattage.. probably 200w (50w x 4).. then you can get a converter from RadioShack that takes the standard stereo headphone jack to RCA and input your carputer right into the amp.. then you dont need any headunit, I ran my ipod like this for a while in an old car after someone broke in and jacked the headunit but left the speakers & amp

You must have missed it in the FAQs. It's pretty prominent.

You never found that link, did you? Why? It's hard to find in the NavBar across the top of the forums, amongst a lot of other crap.

TELL MP3CAR YOU WANT A LINK TO THE FAQ IN A MORE OBVIOUS, NOTICABLE LOCATION HERE.
