This is not the place for car audio.
This probably gets on many members nerves here.

other than the nice screen, i say ***** pioneers.
i used to like them until they stopped using good solid internal grounds, and now use eyelash sized ones that pop at the slighest electrical problem. giving you a lovely noise
And, the price of pioneers I no longer find adequate. You need to spend AT LEAST $300 to get 3 preouts, and at least $400 to get "high volt" preouts.
Pioneer, USED to be good.
now, im going with Eclipse and then a Mac.

high voltage outputs are not as necessary as they once were due to the improvements in amplifier circuitry.
If you're needing 3 preouts, chances are you're spending some money on a system. It's not too far fetched to believe that you would be paying more for the deck...

Well, I know of a few Eclipse decks that come with 3 preouts on the "middle" end of the product line.
and even the crappiest Eclipse has 4v out.
Im just of the mentality that the cost of a HU is always based on how many preouts and the voltage of the preouts. all the other things are aesthetics and bells n whistles.

Great, that's fine. Know why?
The $300 HU that doesn't have the Pre-outs you need has the spinny bizzy boppy things that other people want.
Supply and demand my friend, supply and demand.

And Pioneer, though probably never did, gave up on quality and went after the Bling Bling.

Not true at all. The driving force behind the cost of HUs are those things which cost the manufacturer the most - the LCDs, the circuitry and programming, like internal Eqs and time correction - like Jan said, the bizzy boppy- whatever the hell she said that made me laugh at loud.
Preout voltage has something to do with cost, but honestly not as much as things like the size of the display and the warranty do.
As far as the talk about eclipse Hus go. I actually like the functionality of them and the sound. They pretty much pioneered (no pun intended)the revolution to 8 volt. HOWEVER, I will never use another until they get rid of that RIDICULOUS security system. What is it, ESN or something. The cd track thing? Have they done away w/ that yet?
In my experience with car audio, I have always paid homage to sound quality. For me and my travels, I have found that two HU manufacturers are sitting atop the world of SQ. That would be Alpine and Nak. That's it. To be fair, I've never actually used a McIntosh HU, but whereas I think MAC amps are still the pinacle in audio SQ, I wouldn't rule the HU out without trying them.

I've nerer tried Mc HU's, but looking at the specs (yes, I know, specs don't mean jack these days), it doesn't look all that promising.... Alpine isn't bad for SQ, not bad at all, but they're going down the hill....
+1 on Nakamichi though!

What is/was a decent/best for the buck, Eclipse deck.
other than the 5/8 starting numbers (goes with output voltage), they are all over the place.
and they have the ones than arent even amps, just give you rca outputs. which i think i may favor.
ebay is where im looking, but trying to compare is impossible.

the ones without any internal power are the high end head units.
only you can decide what is the best bang for YOUR buck.
To me, I would be willing to spend a lot more and would feel like my solution was the best bang for MY buck.
find their web site and compare the features to answer your questions.

their website, when it comes to finding specs and info, sucks. its only for newer units, I can find no legacy support.
http://www.eclipse-web.com/download/index.html#pdf
but you are correct, just gotta bite the bullet and find what I needs.
