About the only way I see this working is if you got a phone that was permanent in the car, otherwise this wouldnt be much good if someone stole your vehicle. Do the cheapo prepaid phones offer messaging or internet access to be able to do this or would you have to take out a monthly plan on the thing to make it feasable?

i think its a good idea.
scenario:
you and your friend both have a car-computer and he's at a party or some location that you need to get to. He can activate the tracking and you can get his position.

scenario2:
you're following your friend on a road trip, if you catch a read light you lose him, or he has to try and stop and wait. If you're tracking him, you can just catch up by looking at his location.

anyone else have any scenarios?

Your kids take your car out, you either:

a) Let the tracker log to a file where they went, how fast they went etc and review it later
b) Use their phone or leave yours in the car to transmit the location

You like to race, do time trials etc, you use the logging mechanism to record and compare your laps, races etc.

You like to compare the most efficient way to work, record the tracks and compare.

Two additional elements that are key here, www.motionbased.com has a great facility to view and compare tracks. www.gpsvisualizer.com can be called with lat/lon as parameters to display a location. This can be made into a very easy dynamic link from the database where you log the info.

you think your whore of a girlfriend is cheating on you, so you use the tracker to find out where she really goes on those "long lunches". then you show up with a baseball bat and fix the situation.

you of all people should appreciate the absurdity of an unlikely situation involving a baseball bat...say, like a comeback from -3 games... *sigh* before you even ask, i am indeed originally from the bronx.

I think UK phone providers are considering a phone tracking system for kids, where a parent for a small fee can locate there children by there phones location. Won't this service provide the same info for the car the phones in without the computer that the thief has proberly already removed?

Use a no-ip dns. They have a prog that automatically updates your ip address. Then use eftp and set up an ftp server on your carputer. Then you can download the file from your carputer only when you need it. That way your not using bandwidth when you dont need to. Then all you need is an internet connection thats always on. I don't know if this helps but maybe. Another idea ive had is to use a reverse connection trojan to connect to our carputers regardless of the ftp. You can dowload the file from there as well and you don't need to update the ip. If anyone wants info on any rat's (remote administration tools - aka trojans) let me know.

I think these are really neat. I keep seeing the Nextel commercials, my only concern is how the reception would be depending on the location of the phone. If it's in a pocket or a bag in a car will it lock? If it doesn't lock can it triangulate on the towers? Most people seem to have to ensure the GPS is in plain view of the open sky and is pointed the right way. Do these phones have similar issues I wonder?

sorry chris i was having a really bad day when I accused you of messing up the plans.

So you have software that runs on the carpc, keeping track of the current position.

Would this software be able to periodically upload it's current position by simply visiting a URL ( for the moment, lets keep this seperate from the GPS Track) so that the current position of the car can be monitored in real time?

I wrote prototypes of both, they both work but could use some polishing. If ou follow the links to the threads you should be able to download, anyone with Delphi 6 is welcome to the source if they want to take this a step further.

I know this isn't GPS tracking but some of you might find it useful...

I'm in the UK and I use an old mobile phone hidden in the car signed up to:

http://www.verilocation.co.uk/

It's not GPS but most of the time gives a pretty accurate lock (to nearest street or so) of where the car is...

I did write what you guys are on about...

http://www.stevieg.org/wheresmycar.php

which worked on the same principal you're on about, simply using the internet control which auto-dials the default connection in windows. Never really used it as my proper phone is bluetooth and I take it with me!
