AlienEclipse: I don't like the way it looks with percents... stretching things out... This way is fine for me...

a photoshop action could resize the images.. quite simple really..
the XML is another story.. I'm a graphics guy.. all I know is my TI-85 calc.. and QBasic! .. and some php.
I assume it would be just applying simple percentage multiplication to vlaues in an XML file..

thing is I don't like using one set of images for a bunch of different resolutions... It looks like crap... I know it makes things easier, but everyone runs about 2 res's and now 3 with 800x480 starting to work on M10000... I can handle making 3 sets of images to make it look that much better... From a designer point of view I want the images to be displayed in the sizes that they really are....

The way I interpreted the original poster's suggestion, was that you use percentual values for the clickable REGIONS in the XML values, instead of absolute values. This way, you could use the same XML data file with all 3 sets of images (or any number images, to support multiple resolutions).
I think this assumes that all aspect ratios are the same though. If this is what he meant, it seems to be a great idea!

...but all aspect ratios arn't the same. 800x600 and 800x480 are the prefered resolutions and obviously have a very different aspect ratio.
Do some people really prefer 848x480 to 800x600 (which everything can do)? Is it for non-Lilliput/Xenarc owners?

The answer is: People prefere their monitor's NATIVE resolution. Whatever that turns out to be.

people used 848x480 because it is the closest standard widescreen resolution to the Lilliput/Xenarc's... 800x600 is very stretched and a completly different aspect ratio... Lilliput/Xenarc's are a 15:9 ratio, which is pretty close to 16:9 (848x480)... Of course 800x600 is a standard 4:3...

Actually, I prefer 800x600 on my Lilliput. It still looks perfect using the stretched CF skin. The extra lines are "a good thing" for an embedded nav program. Plus, when I have to exit to windows to re-configure something, it is much easier to do in 800x600. In 800x480 you can't even see the OK/Apply/Cancel buttons because they are below the task bar on some forms (ie: display properties).

But Lilliput's actual res is 800x480 and human eyes are less sensitive to horizontal stretches than vertical ones. Right?
EDIT: Sorry, I had H & V switched initialy... and I realize now this topic is in another thread so I'll be done here now .

It would just need to go through all the images and resize them propertionally. Then go through the XML skin file and adjust all the X, Y, Widths, and Heights propertionally using the ratio from 848x480 to 800x600.
Let me know if someone has written something like this or wants to
david
Because there is not much action for this I decided to spend a bit of my precious time to write a script for the XML conversion. It only does the XML file not the images, this is just an initial version and it is not state of the art programming (I'm not a full time programmer). Hardly any error checking is done and XML parsing is not done like it should be ( I only spend 30min on it to write it) but the script works perfect on David's skin.xml files.
You can convert to any size of skin, just fill in the desired WxH.
If there is need for a more advanced version I willing to spend some time to write a small webpage where you can upload your skin files (images and xml) and convert it on the page. But first I have to see what CF1.3 skins will do.
The script is written in perl and should work on all platforms (Linux, Windows, Mac...). Yes it is perl cause I am a Linux user but my CarPC is still windows
You can dowload it here: CF-skinresizer-0.1.zip
usage:
-unzip
-perl CF-skinresizer-0.1.pl skin.xml newskin.xml
-Fill in the original resolutions and desired resolutions and go....

Bokky: That sounds awesome.... The link didn't seem to work... I will send you a copy of the new 1.3 skin xml file as soon as I have it finished... The image resizing should be to hard to add either... This will definetly help to make 1.3 come out a couple of days early... You rock...

David:
For image conversion/resizing, there are a number of shareware tools that will do the job. I did a little research and came up with this link, that has several utils:
http://www.canadiancontent.net/tech/...ge+Conversion/
I looked at a few, and I think this app in particular could work well:
http://www.batchconverter.com/
This screenshot shows what it can do, including batch resizing:

I appreciate all the help and suggestions... I decided to just go ahead and build all this in.. There is now a Width and Height option in Setup which you can set to any resolution you want and CENTRAFUSE will dynamically resize the skin... This way you don't have to worry about making multiple versions of the same skin...

You have to be kidding me! Awesome!
So, would this take care of both the image stretching, as well as the XML data for clickable areas?

justintime: No more conversions or seperate skins... When you first run CENTRAFUSE setup you just tell it what resolution you want it to run in and it will run in that resolution...
