Dual Display

I currently do not have dualdisplay in my vehicle...however i was noticing in the latest release of RR they are now supporting dual display for mapmonkey. Are there any plans in the near future for implimentation of this? Ie the ability to have nav on your main screen and a movie on another....or even better...multiple movies on multiple machines?! That would be ideal....

Anyway just interested to know what sorts of plans you have for the future

That would be awesome if you can get stuff like that to work.

But to do that you would have to have a pretty decent 2nd VGA card and some good processing power. I'm not sure if those little mobile mobos with the proc onboard would cut it.

Either way I would want to try it

Possibilities are endless

No they aren't. You can get a dual-display PCI or AGP nVidia MX440 for super cheap. If you want to go old-school you could get a dual-head Matrox card on E-Bay for even cheaper.

It might be worth it just to get a 2nd CarPC though. Then you can play networked 3D shooter games in the car.

...and I have never had any problem watching multiple movies on ANY multiple display card.

Ok, I just launched 2 movies on my dual head Matrox with no problem, and the nVidia MX440 is WAY faster than that old piece of junk. Then I ran 10 different movies in seperate windows with 5 on one display and 5 on the other. Still worked/looked fine. What are you talking about?

I do plan on adding dual display support... It actually isn't that complicated to send fullscreen video/dvd/vis to a secondary screen...

Basically the M10000/M12000 machines can't really do it... I have run dual display with addon video cards and these motherboards and they just don't work well... Just about any real MB/Processor or Pentium M system 1.6 or higher should be able to do it fine with a decent video card...

this is something you will see in the future...

It really doesn't have much to do with the video card. Any dual display card will work just fine. My Asus Pundit has dual display capabilities built into the integrated video, which works just fine. You are just watching video/map...not much rendering involved. They would be more cpu intensive than anything.

For the 10 movies I used 120MB SouthPark files so the res was small enough to fit them all on the screen. For the 2-movie test I used DVD ripped 700MB DiVX/XVid files (which look identical to DVD quality to my eyes on my 32" regular Sony TV) running full-screen. Playing video is not hard for a computer (or a dual-diaplay video card) at all. I don't have an EPIA so I can't speak for those, but the PC I used was a Athlon XP1800+ with 512 ram. After the movies loaded, there was no slow-down to the PC what so ever.

Athlon XP1800+ with 512 ram is what did the work not the dual head Matrox
hope you understand most of us dont have that type of power in are cars
i use an athlon 800 with an nvidia fx 5200 that has 128MB with 320 ram and there is no way it would run two dvds on two screens not that i have two dvd drives.
BUT I do have two monitors in the back of my car running from the tv out and it would be nice to have dvd or video on them and destinator on the lilliput.this i think is possible with the power i have .

David is that the sort of thing you are going for ?

yep... the option to send fullscreen video/dvd/vis to secondary screen, which would make it not on the primary screen... fullscreen video/dvd/vis shouldn't be on the primary screen anyway...

I will also have options to only send video/dvd/vis to secondary monitor and never on primary... because of some state laws...

Ok, in a few weeks I will release the first version on my "front end". It have support for multiple screens (up to four screens)

I have it installed in my car and I run tree (3) screens. You can show different content on each screen. For example I run navigation at front and listen to music, one screen at back watch video (with headphones for sound) and one screen listen to it's own music (with headphones for sound). In my car I run a Shuttle XP2000+ with dual onboard graphic card, and one "sitecom" USB2 > VGA for the third screen.

Finally. A developer that has plans for multi monitor support. It's been one of my biggest requests in a front-end. I don't want the GPS to be seen in the back. Having the vis going full time in the back would kick @$$.

Off topic but do you have any plans to change up the vis such as using WinAmp vis?

Derek

PS. The only thing I like about WinAmp are the vis but it's not enough for me to use it for my regular player.
