Option to make CF read from hidden folders?

I have an iRiver H10 20GB that will show up as a Mass Storage device after a little trick. Therefore, CF will recognize the device, but I have to change the Hidden property of my MUSIC folder on my H10 in order for CF to read from that folder.

If the folder is hidden, CF sees the folder, but when I rebuild the library 0 songs are rebuilt. But if the folder is unhidden, then all songs are rebuilt.

This wouldn't be a problem, but my iRiver H10 sets the MUSIC folder back to hidden after I disconnect it from the computer. Trying to use a touchscreen to change folder properties is a pain!

Is there any way to tell CF to read from hidden folders?

not currently, but I will look into it...

note: I can maybe do it for music and videos only, but not pictures or it would pick up things people didn't want to see sometimes...

Did you find UMS firmware (I didn't think there was any) for the H10-20 or are you doing the power-button thing? The reason I ask is that my H10 5 & 6 don't touch the file attributes.

Past that though, given that David is just using Windows APIs, CF shouldn't care about the folder being hidden. Once you set a Music Path to the H10, CF should be able to hit it even after the attribute is flipped back. So:
  • Kick the H10 into UMS mode
  • Plug it into the car
  • Clear the hidden attribute on H10:\Media\Music
  • In CF, head for Settings/Audio/Music Path
  • Set a path to H10:\Media\Music
  • Confirm that you can browse to it from within CF
  • Disconnect the H10, reset into MTP, reset again into UMS
  • Plug it into the car
  • I think CF should still be able to browse to it...
If that doesn't work, then what about setting the Folder options within windows to "Show Hidden Files and Folders"? (Open any folder, then Tools/Folder Options/View)

midiwall - Thanks for the advice. However, I had previously done all the things you mentioned, and the only thing that worked was to change the folder attribute to unhidden.

Also, the H10-20 does not have a USM firmware yet, only the 5/6 GB
versions. So, I am doing the plug-in USB (MTP mode), unplug USB and hold O button to boot into UMS mode. I don't like hitting the reset button.

David, is CF not reading content of hidden folders? Understandable from the .jpg, .gif standpoint of a computer, would have thousands of html images.

**UPDATE** - OK, I am an idiot - I simply created an unhidden folder within the hidden MUSIC folder and viola, CF reads the files and so does the H10. Problem solved.

Yeah, I knew that the 20's didn't have native UMS support (and btw, they won't) so I was curious on why iRiver decided to force that attribute.

silly point to note... are you up on the inards of the H10's? I was one of 5 guys that wrote that core firmware. I designed/wrote the database engine and did a lot of the string conversion routines. iRiver did the UI, but we (PortalPlayer) did the all the underlying fun.

This is why it's strange to hear that they tweaked the handling of that directory flag - they didn't make that change on the 5/6's.

I was also one of 4 people that worked on the DRM software which is in the MTP version. That's something that I'm not that proud of though.
