Running CF on Windows Fundamentals?
Has anyone tried the new XP Embedded based os from MS, Windows Fundamentals.
They claim it'll run the .net framework, and apparently Firefox works on it. Has anyone tried CF.
I like the idea of an XP-E based system intended to work fine on older hardware, perhaps it will even boot quickly on an M10000! Something my nLite'd XP still can't manage.

Centrafuse will work with XP Embedded... you just have to create the image that includes all your required files with the OS, drivers, codecs, etc...
they can take a little time to make... VIA I believe has some templates for some of their motherboards, but others I believe you can use some tools to set up the complete system, run the application, and have it write out all the dependencies... then build the XPE image...
once built you would just boot straight into Centrafuse, it would be about as fast as the instant on feature for a Samsung Q1 UMPC...
it might give you a second or maybe not, over run as shell on a very light setup, or nLited...

Thank you.
I believe VIA Arena use to have XPE images for M10000 motherboards... You would need to add a few things until you got Centrafuse running...
there was a thread started and people have posted nLite config files that work...
There was a thread were I started listing off some of the things I could think of like MDAC, .NET 1.1, MSWEBDVD, DirectX, etc...
Having that image with all the system drivers is a HUGE jump start... They even make a tool to detect on an XP system to help build the image I believe...
It is tedious work for sure, and you can't ever add anything to the system really from a peripheral or hardware sense...
I found it not much faster than a good XP install with nothing installed except the needed drivers, drivers only no software running in the system tray... Then WinDVD5, FFDShow, .NET 1.1, and setting Centrafuse to run as shell...

I have just been playing with fundamentals, and so far it seems to be a very nice stripped down option.
At the moment I have it setup smaller than my nlite installtion, and it seems to run faster and more stable. Nlite itself doesn't work for it, but I have just been deleting things with trial and error, and I think I'm going to be using this for my new install.

Since you've actually used it, just how restricted is it?
I hear it has artificial limitations so you can only run a few programs at once, is this true? How useful would it be as a general purpose OS or a gaming OS?
That said, I'm probably going to go with Windows 2000 for my Car PC as it is possible to boot that without a BIOS battery using LinuxBIOS.

I haven't used it that intensively yet, but so far I haven't seen any restrictions. Just looks like it's striped of all the clutter that comes with windows.

Failure.
I'll write this in before others try waiting there time on this. I had it all setup perfectly, quick and a really small installation, but when I went to install my gps everything went wrong.
The usb-serial controller would not install properly. I tried many different drivers and nothing would work. Too bad because this was a really nice lite product.

Do you mean that CF workd and just usb-serial devices can't be installed or haven't install CF yet.

Everything was working perfectly in cf. It's windows that didn't like the usb-serial driver. Something about a service mentioned in the inf not being available. I tried to hack around it but didn't have any luck.

xpe
Hi all, even i have been struggling to get xpe + cf working for quite some time now.
there are two things where i am stuck
1. cf seems quite sluggish on xpe
2. cant seem to get the vinyl audio drivers to work with my hardware
any idea will be appreciated.
i am planning to get things to work first, then go in for HORM and EWF and finally port it to a usb flash disk. kinda always better to have the os on flash than hdd, the failure rate will be much lower.
