Turning off monitor

Hey,

When I press and hold the dimmer button, it doesn't turn the screen off, it merely makes the display all black. Is this normal operation?

If it's not, is it possible to make it so that it will actually turn the screen off by pressing and holding the dimmer button in the same manner that it automaticaly turns off after x minutes of inactivity? Google bring up quite a few code snippets on how to do it...
