This is a really cool idea!
I don't mind punching in the price of gas and my mileage every time i fill however it could use gps and give you an option to put it in manually if its off or something should be pretty easy to do. Ie display what gps says your mileage should be at...if it isn't right punch it in yourself.
This is also good for something such as claiming mileage for work etc.
so if someone wants to take the initiative

i posted this in another thread but for the LAZY among us obd is nice gps is better but what is tried and true?
speedometers they arent as complex as they look from what i understand it will send pulses either by cable spinning or electronically from the tranny most cars 1000 pulses = 1 mile
the rest is math and programing (not my department)
if your car sends 1200 pulses then u modify the value simple? or am i just underestimating the complexities of things
shouldnt we all be albe to tap into the speedometer pulses via a serial connection or someting of the like?
i honestly never thought it totally through as i dont have a means of programming it but let me know what you think

I use the desktop version of carcare from http://www.carcaresoftware.com/ (30 day trial)
It is for managing mutiple vehicles, but I just track the vehicle that it is installed in. Obviously it is a manual data entry setup. Every time I fill up I enter current odometer, gallons and total cost. All other values are defaults or calculated from previous entries. It has alot of features I don't use and the interface is not great for incar use, but it is functional. I have a complete fuel and maintenance record on my 04 dakota bought new. I have been tracking my 02 F-350 starting maintenance at 26k and fuel at 100k and I am now at 130k. The information is in a database that I backup to a flash card incase the HD fails.
It would be great if the software you create can import and export a standard data format so that information can be tracked for years on different programs and versions. Check out carcare for ideas on what is important.

CareCare and KarKare are similar, but not the same product (just FYI).
Seems like the concept is the sane, also appears that CarCare has a lot more features.
The hey here is to Keep it Simple , for in-car use.

I'd use it, but since I also have OBD (not 2, the one on a 91' 3000GT) connected to my car, it would be awesome if you could archetect it so it would be easy for me to "interface" your plug-in source code to my OBD and/or GPS. Can on work on something like this in parallel with you Jarrod? PM me.

Jarrod, any progress/status? Would you rather have someone else have a go at this? (thought I'd open the door for that, in case you think you will have no time...)
A lot of people excited about this, but this thread has 5 pages and no code! LOL
