Yeah, Paul was thinking it was a shot-in-the-dark that the added OCX would help.

Bummer... C'mon Paul, we know you can do it!

Support for MapPoint 2004 is currently broken, period.

I cannot find a runtime way to fix this.
According to the trepid MP programmers on http://www.mapforums.com, my problem is "by design".
They justify this by saying that MP is backwards compatible, but not forwards compatible.

I semi-disagree.
The app I am distributing (CFMapPoint) includes MP2K6 interop dlls.
If MP is really backwards compatible like they say, it is these MP2K6 DLLs that should be able to work on MP2K4.

In reality, things are broken because MP2K4 is loading the MP2K6 interop dlls...and this fails.
MP2K4 can only load MP2K4 interop dlls.
MP2K6 can load both MP2K4 and MP2K6 interop dlls.
It is a semantical argument to say that MP2K6 either is or is not backwards compatible.
The point is that MP2K4 cannot load the MP2K6 interop dlls.

I have three solutions:
  1. Two seperate installers:
    One for MapPoint 2004
    One for MapPoint 2006
You will have to pick the correct installer; I can maybe to some friendly load-time check to see if you are using the wrong one.
  2. One large install file w/ both 2K4 and 2K6 interop DLLs that I reference via seperate namespaces.
I don't even know if the latter part is possible, but it may be worth a try.
The install size should not grow more than a few 100K.
  3. Drop MP2K4 support
I don't want to do this, because MP is expensive and I wouldn't want people to feel that they need to pay M$ money for MP2K6 just so they can run CFMapPoint.

#1 and #2 are complicated by the fact that I don't have a copy of MP2K4 handy (mine is buried deep somewhere in a storage shed).

I'll try to borrow a copy from a friend to tithe me over until I get my copy back out of storage in another month or two (once I move in to a new house).

Sorry...that's why we call this stuff Beta!
(I feel better that at least now I know the reason for the problem)

HelloMP2K6 is a stand alone test app to see how well I can get an app that links/compiles to MP2K6 to work w/ MP2K4.
It won't do *you* any good, but it does tell me what some of the major issues are.

I can easily fix this, but I have honestly not taken the time to dig my legit copy of MP2K4 out of the storage unit that I am using to store some of the crap I had in my condo so that I can sell it.
That's a sad excuse, I know, but that's my life at the moment, and I don't really feel like digging through storage boxes just so that I can get to my copy of MP2K4.
I had no idea it would take this long to sell my condo; I had planned to sell it fairly quickly and get the boxes out of storage in to a new house.

It's just taking longer than I planned.
Sorry for the ridiculous delay, but that's life!

Is there any chance that someone else will pick up this project and try to make mp2004 work with this?

It is just a matter of compiling it against MP2K4 with Visual Studio and then creating a seperate setup file for this "special" version.
The source code is available for anyone w/ MP2K4 and VS to do this!
Again, I would do it if I had my copy of MP2K4, or I had the MP2K4 interop DLLs.
Hmm....wait a minute...I may just still have those!

Let me brainstorm a bit and see what I can come up w/...

Try the new version that I came up w/ tonight that I posted to the project's web site:
http://workspaces.gotdotnet.com/CFMapPoint

I just wrote this tonight and will not be able to try it out until tomorrow.
If you beat me to it then great, otherwise I should let y'all know tomorrow how it went.

GDN kindof sucks, and their convenient URL above does not work any more for me.
Is anyone else having problems using the above URL?
If so, just use the less friendly one of:
http://www.gotdotnet.com/workspaces/...5-c3dff2c6982a

In case anyone was wondering:

YES, I did crawl through my storage unit today for nearly an hour looking for my copy of MP2K4.
NO, I did not find it. I came up w/ a few other ideas that may avoid my having to use it.

We'll see!

It works for me, but I think it's because I have a cookie saying I'm a member of the project. Dunno for sure.
