I know what you mean. I feel the same way... slider would look kind of cheesy in this app, in my opinion. But everyone feels differently about it... not really worth debating or getting philosophical over...

...which is why I think there should be options in the skinning. All that stuff in the first post would be able to be included or not included at the skinner's discretion, ie. if the following code is present, CF would use "slider.png" to track the progress of a song. If it's not there, no worries. <slider>
<X>40</X>
<Y>400</Y>
<WIDTH>600</WIDTH> // could be 'height', which would make a vertical slider
<ALIGN>Center</ALIGN>
<ICONWIDTH>64</ICONWIDTH>
<ICONHEIGHT>64</ICONHEIGHT>
</slider>

I looked into Mouse Gestures for my Carputer, but I quickly figured out that ANYTHING that requires you to touch-drag onn a touchscreen is highly unreliable. It gets so f'ing frustrating it just ain't funny! Too bad, as I do like the Mouse Gestures in general for my home PC. (w/ real mouse of course).

Why is that JIT? Have you tried StreetDeck? It sounds like a cool idea. The "gestures" are not position dependant at all, so unless your TS doesn't work right (like my Lilli ) or you have trouble keeping your finger on your TS (not a problem in my car), I don't see the issue. I value your opinion though, so please explain.

EDIT: I can't believe you changed your tune on the drop-down menu. I still think it is totally gay

EDIT2: ...and sliders are great!!! (I'm valuing your opinion less and less. jk)

@RPM: LOL!

Well, I just really enjoy having LARGE buttons. I agree we need BOTH: Static menu AND large buttons. Just hard to achieve that on such small screen real estate.

re: gestures... problem is not mouse poisition, but rather the ability to maintain a continuous trace on the screen without 'letting go' on the pressure of the screen. Touch screens are really not made for dragging the cursor... they are really only good at making clicks, if you know what I mean. Not saying it is not possible -- just saying that in my esperience 'dragging' the cursor on TS is very hard/unreliable.

Some of the roads here in town would make it impossible to touch and drag with out putting too much pressure on the screen without hurtn it..ive tried using RR in the car and it never really worked how i wanted it too...

Im not familiar with meedios "feeds", but i think this is something i have been wanting for long time... are those feeds just textual or can they contain images? cause thing im after is graphical in nature. So u could make plugins display graphical info on predetermined places on main skin. These could include compas from nav, gauges from OBD, warnings from OBD, battery and signal statuses from GSM, weather warnings and even proximity warning from range sensors or currently applying streetsigns and speedlimit from OSR (term i just coined, Optical Sign Regocnition).

EDIT: even though JIT stated it might be possible solely trough plugin programming... that is not what im after... Hell no! i dont wanna poppup contest between my carpc plugins while im middle of traffic... im after well defined and customizable infrastructure, which frontend provides its plugins to report their most crucial data

U better not have voted on behalf of drop-down menu... cause that would totally invalidate your statement. come on, how windowish is that.

I think slider is mandatory, atleast on video department.

they belong on an EQ, no doubt. Real EQs have sliders.

They don't belong on Audio screen. Real audio players don't have sliders.

I think on video screen it should be OK though.

There is no wrong or right to this... not going to discuss this topic anymore LOL

Birds have wings -> Airplanes have wings

Would u ban helicopters because of that?

iPODs have a slider. Granted you can't drag-and-drop it, but it is there. For that matter, I cannot think of a single music player for windows that does not have a slider (WMP, WinAmp, MPC, iTunes, etc, etc, etc... they all have sliders). Even some OEM car stereos have a "slider". Progress bars are always considered a ton better than just a ratio. As long as it is on a touch-screen, you might as well make it draggable (ie: a slider).

Granted there is no right or wrong, but I cannot understand why anyone would object to a slider in the default skin.

David: Whether you add it to your default skin or not, you should implement it for other skinners (you could even make it a "plug-in" if you wish). There really should be a lot of "capabilities" that can be used in skin design (though it would look horrible to use them all in a single skin). Right now the whole interface seems too "default-skin oriented" instead of just providing a ton of features and letting the skinners fit them in to their UI however they wish.

I object to the slider because it looks horible for something i would never use...i mean i cant think when i ever want to jump to different parts of songs...im not saying anybody is wrong for liking it but i seen the sample screenshot with the slifer added in and just looked ugly to me...just hope there is the option in the XML to disable...so many people feel the same about having the option i think vettid will put that feature in...
