In dash car MP3 CD Costs

Now for a little different question, let us assume there is a high quality near OEM grade MP3/CD car radio with the following functions:
Drop-in replacement for many original equipment audio systems; Automatically detects MP3 CD-ROMs;Over 10 hours of music on one CD; Up to 255 MP3 songs in 255 user defined directories; Supports bit rates of 32kbps-320kbps, including variable bit rate (VBR); Multi-session capable; MACH TracTM allows quick access to any song on the MP3 CD; Supports multi-layer directory structure; Electronic tuning with 6 AM/12 FM station memory; Digital Clock; CD music play; CD changer compatible;Scan and Seek MP3; Shuffle MP3; Repeat MP3; Supports multi-layer directory structure; plays discs in either flat file or directory mode;
Advanced features included Scan/Seek Directory, Repeat Directory, and Shuffle Directory; and more.

Given this, how much would you pay for an in-dash MP3 CD like this?

You should find a limited selection of in-dash mp3 players on this website, under hardware. Some of 'em with big HD's are like 12 and 13 hundred. But the features are great. I'm goin for the Kenwood Z919, JUST like a new CD player, but mp3 reading capabilities. Can even read ALL the file names and scroll them across the screen. I'm about to pay 360 for mine at a local car audio place. Word of advice, dont get the Aiwa, they're no good for car stuff. Happy hunting

BadAcid - mp3designer is not in the market for one... He's designing one and has no clue as to what he can charge for it. His postings here are a poor-man's attempt at a market research survey.

No offence to mp3designer, but he suffers the scourge of most "inventors" in history - That is, he may have a great idea for a product, but seems to lack the business sense.

Mike's Morning Lesson: If you're gonna go through the blood, sweat and tears (beers?) of creating something to sell, at least take a 6-month night course in marketing, so some would-be-inventor thief (like Thomas Edison) doesn't rip you off.

FYI- we have extensive market research that provides market segmentation and target prices including competitive product data. However, despite the caustic cynicism here, we wanted more data from "real" MP3 users. Our design team is ultimately interested in the user and how they might use different products, doing so safely while driving, and maximizing the features while trying to maintain low pricing.

Since the cheapest unit on the market right now is the Aiwa MP3 at $299, I would have to say less than $299. If I'm going to pay more, I'd rather go with a better system like the Kenwood, or wait a month or so for the new Aiwa's, Sony's, Kenwood's, or even the Phatbox.

Now, if you could do an in-dash 6-CD changer that could play MP3's, that would be interesting.

If you have all that then why come to a place where 99% of the people want to build there own player. You would probably have better luck at mp3.com or one of those places that deals with mp3's not home build car computers that play them. To me it doesn't seem like you have market sense. If you did then Kenwood, AIWA, and all who are making in dash mp3 players would be on this board asking us if we like this and how much should this cost. Frankly charge $1000 I don't care I spent more than that for my setup and I really don't care I am having fun building the damn thing and trying new ideas and showing it off to my friends.
