The main chip at the heart of the LCD Controller is setup for S-Video but the PCB itself doesn't implement the capability. With some micro-surgery to the PCB and some luck, it "should" accept S-Video. I haven't tried to make it work yet, so this is only educated speculation.

As an aside, I finally got my breakout cable for my laptop that breaks out the S-Video port to S-Video, Composite, SPDIF.
My test was using the LCD as a second head in x-windows. (640x480)
On the Nitemax LCD , I could not see any difference between S-Video and Composite. Obviously S-Video is a better signal, but for the nitemax LCD, don't think it's the limiting factor. Either way the screen was usable.

Thanks shotgun. The HUD thread kinda died there... Either way, i think i'll be happy wiht it as long as it displays up to 640 x480. I hope IG2.1 works wiht that and the lenses will enlarge it sufficetly. If not, i'll have to get a bigger LCD and that would suck...

I've just been busy with other stuff and the install itself. Getting really agravated. X is just doing silly things randomly and hunting them down is a PITA.

Lost???
I spent days on what turned to be a really weird grounding issue (actually screwing with the bits and pieces on the pc itself), then the new weirdness. Linux when it works is great, but when you have to go hunting stuff down, can be a real pain in the ***. I wouldn't mind but it all worked, then just stopped. Probably some oddity in how it saves x-sessions.
Hopefully I'll have it back in this weekend and a camera or two.

Okay, I've read a lot about the prices and availabilities and order status's and such but........
Can anyone tell me exactly what these can be used for?
Im thinking about using it by fixing it to the front bumper and using it as a wanna be nite vision system (kinda like they have on the higher priced Benz's or Jag's)
Would this be good? or are they not weatherproof?
Would I be able to connect it to my mini ITX carputer?
Would it be able to see 50+ feet downroad? Clear enough to be worthwhile?
Any other purposes of this that would be interesting?

Look at Project Nitevision, stalling a bit on the HUD, but it's doable.
If your mini-itx can accept a composite input, then you can capture, otherwise, you'll need a PCI,usb capture device.
Not weatherproof, you could make your own housing though, personally, I like the view from inside.
Mark has different CCDs, the Ultra ones are better and he has both color and black and white. On the ultra ones, you can also reverse the image, perfect for rear view cam.
They make great general purpose cameras as well. Much better than the cheap cameras your likely to get for security or capture purposes. For instance, the image quality and IR sensitivity is 10 times better than the Lorex cam I have out where I park and it was 4 times as much.
How much you can see and whatnot is somewhat a function of the lens.

awesome, thanks for the info. yeah, you're right, higher up behind the windsheild is better. plus it gives you a better viewing angle on the road.
But what about it's nightvision use? Headlights go 30-40ft downroad, would this then be able to make me see objects 40-100ft downroad? like a deer or fallen tree or something? have any night time screenshots?

Somewhere in that thread I linked, there's pics and video.
A few issues, it's never really that dark around here in the city.
There are still some issues to work out as the cameras can be too sensitive and get overwhelmed by streetlights (then again, don't need night vision if the road is lit).
Auto-iris lens helps, I've got to try some polarizing films one as well.

Just a observation, when i tried out the nitemax in darkness, higher f number (f1.6) made the ocassional lights appear like bright suns in the displays while lower f(1.4 i belive) didn t wash out the screen as much and made everything look a lot better
I hope that helps
