I'm guessing that it is actually the other way around. A lower f-Number is a larger aperature (larger iris opening) and therefore more sensitive to bright lights.
If you are using an adjustable iris lens, the f-Number rating is usually the lowest the lens can reach with a wide-open iris. Closing the iris will increase the f-Number proportionally.

Well even thought I expected the same thing I found out that by closing the iris my glare increased! That is for relatively open iris settings, when the iris was almost closed then it was all dim of course, no more glare but no detail also. I guess there is less contrast of the surrounding and the bright light wen the lens is bigger so the ccd can compensate better? i don't really know...

Now that I have capture working on my carpc, I'm thinking of trying to drive the Iris through software, capturing a single frame like twice a second, and then using a PIC or something to control how open the iris is.

Got sidetracked in dependency hell with my media player. Every time I update one thing, something else breaks. Haven't touched anything carpc in like 10 days in disgust.
I don't think HW-wise , there would be anything that difficult about driving the iris, though software, that's a bit of a different story. I'd be worried about cpu utilization.

It's a pain, I had to ***** with it before I put it in. The thing that really bothers me is that the code that won't compile (smpeg) hasn't changed in like 4 or 5 years, but it was on the system before. The only thing I can think of is that in the last four years there was some change in the friend syntax in C++, unfortunately, my C++ is rusty as all hell and the reason it was previously working was because I installed it as a package through apt.
I think I'm done using linux testing distros from now on and sticking with stable ones. Way too much of a moving target.

Some auto-iris lenses accept video as an input and they'll do all of the work for you in terms of managing the iris. The DSP Based Ultra CCD Boards have drive outputs for the two main kinds of auto-Iris. It would be much better to let the CCD Board and lens do the job together they were desinged for.

The thing is Mark, I tried letting the camera do it, and it still was horrible with the glare.
I haven't tried many, but the only one that worked acceptable in my book was the giant Compustar one I have. But that thing had a lot of options I doubt I'll ever find on a small lens. It works from the video signal but has several adjustment screws to impact the processing (center weighted <-> point weighted, etc)
Here's a pic with the auto-iris lens (Not the compustar)
And the vid...
6mb divx
Maybe there is something I'm missing, but it still gets blinded pretty bad.

I think it's a no go. I saw the guy a couple months ago, he said he thought he tossed them but would check. Haven't seen him since.

He had tons of stuff like that. Was really into CCTV, so he'd buy things just to buy them, then when he moved, he had to ditch a lot.
I just found the control boxes off of those IR cameras with illuminators. Apparently they were from Atari and used for motion capture.
