looking for ideas regarding media sync over the internet

i'm thinking about creating a program (or probably an RR plugin) that will work the same way programs like ezsync does, with the exception of the fact that media syncing will occur over the internet rather than over a LAN. I wish to do this because i have a broadband connection in the car now and wish to update music files on the go rather than depending on leaving the computer on in the driveway or syncing. I'm looking for ideas on how to accomplish sync over the internet. Anybody have any theorys as to how this will be manageable?

If you are doing from your home system, it just needs a VPN connection.

In fact if you can set up a VPN connection to your home PC from your car PC, then Upd8 will work.

Yeah, but you would need to log in to your VPN each time. I would suggest writing an application that finds the newest versions (modify date) of files and copies the newest one over the old one. You can use a software that updates a Dynamic DNS with your car's address should it's IP ever change. That way you wouldn't need to authenicate each time you want to sync your data.

A VPN would provide encryption though which would be a plus.

That's exactly what Upd8 does

Oh and you can get VPNs to automatically connect.

Even better. Never got a VPN to auto connect, but I don't see why not.

Do a google search for Karen's Power Tools. It lets you sync directories across a network.

What I intend to do is use a combination of that and VLC. Most likely I will jump on my laptop while sitting in my car and transfer away. That way I dont have to unmount everything.
