I'm going to merge this with the original thread since many of these questions are covered in that thread. Hopefully it will make searches easier on some folks in the future.

Still Nothing working. The screen comes up with Downloading... but nothing else. When it was working a few days ago (before the upgrade) it would say X of Y images. I've tried this under Zipcode and City.

I just tried this on my other computer and same issue (my development platform)

hmmm. I have heard that some of the digimods are not working with the upgrade, which is the main reason why I have yet to upgrade. One suggestion you could try if you have a home pc is to restore a version of streetdeck that works with the digimods, run the digimod then manually transfer the new files over to your car pc.
Otherwise you will have to wait to the streetdeck guys to fix this issue with the most recent upgrade

thanks bembowe. I downgraded to 1.1.0.0 and it looks like its working great
Also I was doing some reasearch and found these stats if at all curious (I didn't see posted here)

Each Square is 256x256 pixels

# of squares to fill the earth
# 15 1073741824
# 16 4294967296

Meters per pixel (x)
# 15 4.78
# 16 2.39

square Meters per square (x * 256)^2
# 15 1497392.7424
# 16 374348.1856

square Miles per square (z)
# 15 0.57814657
# 16 0.144536643

//Each Side is c miles long
x 20 squares (sq lengths) ((z * 20) * 2) //20 square N,E,S,W
# 15 23.1258628
# 16 5.78146572

x 50 squares (sq lengths) ((z * 50) * 2) //20 square N,E,S,W
# 15 57.814657
# 16 14.4536643

These last two are based on the equator. They will vary as you go N/S or E/W dependant on the Mercator Mapping Projections. For more info check it out here:

VECache Working now with 1.1.0.0

Thanks for the tip on version 1.1.0.0. maps are now downloading. I also found that i can use a different pc with streetdeck trial version. If you get to task manager and minimize SD, the countdown timer stops and it will still download the maps in the background. Very very nice. thanks again!

Wow. this is great. I`ve been looking for this quite a whhile now. Finally.
And then to the downsides. I`m using 1.1.1.0 I have to because of the HQCT-addin. HQCT-addin.
Tested it in 1.1.1.0 with no luck.
Is it possible for you ,bembowe, to make it work in 1.1.1.0?
Or have I understood it right that I can download ie 1.1.0.0, run it in dev-mode and download what i fancy, then tranfser it to my CarPuter and be good to go?
Final one. I installed it on my CarPuter to be, 1.1.1.0 I did not reg any .dll Where I supposed to.

thx

Simple solution

Hey Guys,

I have really no idea how CarPCs work or what this forum is about, but I found this thread through a google search looking also for a way to cache Virtual Earth. I haven't tested this extensively, but I think I have come up with an easy way to cache maps without using any other tools than Virtual Earth itself. I've checked out what the browser does when you zoom in and out of Live Search Maps with a tool that was formely called 'FileMon'. I've noticed that it saves everything into the folder 'C:\Documents and Settings\<Your User Name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Virtual Earth 3D' ONLY IF you have 3D enabled and it seems to reuse the data when you open the map at a later point in time. So you could basically just synchronize the cache folder mentioned above on your home PC and CarPCs. You still have to manually look at the area but at least it's cached. Can somebody verify that this works?

Just another quick note on how to use Virtual Earth offline. You need to start it while having an internet connection by going to maps.live.com (maps.live.com/virtual earth won't show up if you don't have an internet connection). Make sure 3D is enabled, because maps are only cached when in 3D mode. You can unplug your internet connection as soon as the globe is shown. You can then work with Virtual Earth as if you had an internet connection. It will access your cached maps, you won't even notice that your offline because it is so seemless. Hope this helps!

Another quick note: "Bird's Eye" is not being cached.

That's where the problem is, and the Virtual Easrth Cache comes in. Not all CarPCs can get internet access when they start up.

Got it to work on 1.1.1.0!

Hey everybody, I was having a heck of a time getting this thing running. I downgraded to 1.1.1.0 not realizing that it wasn't working on anything above 1.1.0.0.

It looks like it's not setting the zip code properly somewhere around line 128

Line 70
PHP Code:
    Download.Enabled true

Replace xxxxx with your zip code obviously

PHP Code:
Function Module_OnGetText(UserStringInputStringCancelled)

zipcodeLbl.Caption "xxxxxx"

cityLbl.Caption ""

latlonLbl.Caption ""

One thing that might be improved upon is an update on the function that downloads the files. Adding in a FilesExists check would prevent the files from re-downloading. Maybe a checkbox that says to overwrite files or not. So after making the changes above I can't change the zip code used using the form...

well it's a little inconsistant. If I enter a zip code in using the form it doesn't work and just displays "Downloading..." but if I just start it up and click download it starts "x of x Downloaded"
