Post vehicle location to internet / google earth ?

Attention all you coders/programmers. I am looking for some help and willing to pay for it.

I am contractor for a large POS installation company. I am looking to take a trip across the US and have my company tell me where the jobs are close to me. What I need is for something that works in SD so I don't have to jump out to check/configure, that can post my whereabouts to either google earth somehow, or my web site via some sort of map.

I have seen programs that work like this before, but I have never successfully gotten anything to work.

The program would have to be able to update constantly if it had an internet connection, or if no connection is available it would have to post as soon as one became available.

Any takers?

Wink Possible Project Taker

TinSolder...I have been thinking about setting this up myself and figure if people want something like this, it could be done using a web service which could receive location updates from the car pc. We could either create a simple SD MOD or a windows app to send the updates when the internet connection is available.

We'd need to determine where the web service could sit that collects the data, but I could house it on my personal site to begin with and we could figure out where to go from there.

Let me know if this sounds like something that would work for you and I could work with you to do some tests.

Thanks,
Chris (PCKScout)

I have servers since I am in the computer business. I saw something once that used Google maps to post location. The guy who owns the bug (bugbyte or ibug or something) had in his car. I could put up space for the data no prob.

Mologogo is what you want. Go to their site and buy the phone preloaded with the application. They can track you on the site if you make your location public. You can also forward your location and past tracks to a map like I've done. It takes a little knowledge and a net domain account to do it.

Cost: Phone about $70, you have to sign up for a Boost mobile account and load it with minutes. About $10 a month max.

That's the zero config option. Just make sure the phone is running the app and you have a beacon people can see on the web.

You can also forward your location to w3bMa5t3r's site using Mologogo or you can have Road Runner do it. Go here to find out how.

I have experience publishing data to Google Maps and Google Earth. Have you found what you're looking for, or do you still request that someone do some work for you?

Talking Prototype Solution

All,

Sorry for the delay, but my friend was doing a rally and wanted the same type of app, so I was focused on that. If you want, take a look at what I built and let me know if this is something others would want or be interested in. The application runs on SD and uploads location information to a web service much like the other services mentioned, except I also take a screen capture from one of the pc cameras connected and upload that to display with the location pin. The solution will also zoom into bird's eye view, if there are maps available.

You can see the end of the rally run since it only shows the last 50 locations currently at http://www.tucson-bangers.com

(Yes it is a real site and I didn't name it!) ;0)

Once on the site, click the Rally Tracker tab.

If this looks like something anyone would be interested in, let me know as I haven't decided whether it is worth the effort to try to make it public.

Later,
PCKScout

So any more work on this now that we hear SD will still be around? I looked at about 10 other solutions but none really work easily and automatically. I was hope for an SD plugin.

Question Are there other takers

TinSoldier,

I haven't pushed this further since I didn't know where SD was going. Now that it is going forward, I think this would be a good app to put forward. My only question is whether SD plug-ins will work the same with the new version. If there is interest, I will push this forward and release it publically.

Are there others that would use this?
