So I'm still new to carputing and I'm doing some research on OBD-II interfaces. I'm looking at buying the ElmScan ISO USB OBD-II connectorfor my Honda because it seems to be a reasonable price:

Are there any good open source/freeware front ends that support this? Do any of the higher end front ends support this? I can only do very basic software tweaking.

If this question belongs somewhere in the software/front end forums, feel free to move it (mods).

I'd suggest you look into the OBDPro interface.

That will do more than just ISO. It's ELM 327 compatible so you'll find some freebie software packages out there. It's less than the Scantool solution. If that StreetDeck works with the ELM based unit, it should be fine with this.

I'm not sure what programming you can do, but here's a little sample app that I wrote for the OBDPro interface.

Hmmm..... I'm a little confused why I would pay $40 more for OBDpro over the ElmScan tool? They both look like decent products with decent software, but I only need ISO9141. Is the OBDpro software integrateable (word?) into one of the free/open source front ends?

At the moment I'm pretty useless with programming even though I'm taking an advanced C++ course next semester.

The OBDPro supports multiple protocols. So you could use it with Ford, GM, Honda, etc..

The OBDPro is ELM 327 compatible. So if an app is written for the ELM, it should work with the OBDPro interface.


Hopefully the class isn't too advanced. lol

Goldenley: I guess it really boils down to wether you would be switching cars in the near future, almost any new car will support CAN so the ISO interface will no longer work so you will end up having to spend more money to get a interface that works with CAN, but I agree if all you need is ISO then the ELMScan ISO is a good deal as you can save some money, but for an apples to apples price comparision you need to compare the ELMScan 327 vs the OBDPro since the OBDPro version is almost $ 50 cheaper than the ELMScan 327.

so what exactly is the full functionality of this
if its just to pull info then what can it pull that isn't already on the dash?
anything more helpful?
i do like knowing what can go on under the hood but i would like to be able to unlock the full potential of some of my bolt on mods too

try reading the thread that I linked to. It will show you more about what it shows.

And it pulls WAYYYYY more than what is shown on your dash. I'd suggest you do a bit more reading about exactly what OBD-II is before you go much further.
