I'm a nubie looking for a scan tool or program

Hi
I looking at a scan product http://www.obdscan.net/ or a scan tool http://www.iequus.com/news/news.php?id=23. I have some pros and cons for both the equus scan tool would cost $220 but it comes with all the adapters to connect to just about any car. The scan program cost $140 But I don't know how many other adapters and other programs I'll need to get the full use out of it. Maybe the members here can suggest other alternatives.
