I can't speak for Land Cruiser, but Ford diesels use extended codes. The core OBDII is for basic information, but the engine has more sensors and switches than a standard gasoline engine, plus it is missing some emissions systems such as a catalist, O2 sensor, AIR pump, throtle plate, etc.
Your mechanic may be refering to the extended data. Visit
