How should I calculate fuel range

Hi all

What should the estimated range based on remaining fuel be calculated on?

Should it be on current MPG, this will go up and down as the MPG goes up and down and will be zero when at rest.

Or, should it be worked out using average MPG, this wont change a lot and if you work out that you have 200 miles left to go and then drive like an idiot, you're not going to get any where near 200 miles.

Any thoughts

cheers

Simon
