Gauge interface for classic vehicles

A thought that I've had recently is to spend a bunch of money on after market gauges for my 1972 Chevelle. Not only to make it look decent but also to have some of the stock ones replaced that don't work right now. I'm not going to be ripping the dash apart doing this, there will be a console built to have them mounted.

But, I had a thought today that may change those plans. I've always been partial to having a carputer, and wouldn't mind using said money to build one rather than have all the manual guages.

That being said, this car of course doesn't have an ODB port to speak of. Most (if not all) carputer software that I know of is setup for use with those. Basically I am looking for a way to interface a bunch of wires coming from random gauge sender units to a PC to display the gauges on screen rather than an actual gauge.

After some quick Google-fu it doesn't appear there is an "out of box" unit that will do it. Does anyone know of anything out there that might?

You'll need to install your own sensors and your own monitoring system. I suggest the Innovate Modular Tuning System.

With that you can daisychain several modules together and hookup lots of sensors. You can monitor using their own gauges, a windows CarPC, or a standalone gauge system like DashDAQ to view the data from the daisychain. Their modules have plastic cases (bad) but have mounting flanges and decent connectors to do a clean job on wiring (good). Also they a wide variety of modules that can measure temperature, voltage, and plenty of stuff on an old car.

Lots of people use fusion brain to do exactly that.

If you're using Linux on the PC, it's possible to use fusion brain and obdsim to use OBDII software with your pre-OBDII car. [disclaimer: obdsim is something I wrote]

And if you use windows, then you can use 1 of several applications for the Fusion Brain. MDX (what comes with it), plugins for Centrafuse or RoadRunner/RideRunner, or standalone others written by various talented people on these forums.
