Dash Command on F-650 Ford

I have the J1939 connecter ( supposedly ) and would like to know the possibility of installing any type of OBD-II scanner on the truck to use dash command

Are you sure it's the J1939 connector? Can you post a picture? The last F-650 I saw (model year 2006 I think - it had the Cat engine) had a regular looking OBD-II style 16-pin connector. Unfortunately, I did not have my laptop with me at the time, so I have no idea what OBD-II protocol it supported (if any).

Yup, that's a J1939 connector. Can you pop the dust cover?

Sadly, J1939 is fundamentally incompatible with OBDII. Hardware is the same (CAN), but the way messages are encoded and the way communication is structured, are completely different.

There are some low cost J1939 solutions available PM me and I can send you the info

You could also look at Autotap but they are expensive!

I have encountered connectors like this in some heavy duty Chevy trucks that are actually J1708 in a J1962 connector. That took awhile to figure out.

That's odd. Do they at least use the same CAN pins (6 & 14)?

J1708 isn't CAN, but they used the J1850 pins. Which, ironically, are the same pins that are driven by our product for J1708. I.E. our device can be configured for heavyduty or OBDII and the same pins on our cable are used for J1708 and J1850, so all we did was change the connector and it all worked.

Sorry, I was thinking "J1939".
