Check out http://www.elmelectronics.com/ .They sell interface chips for less than $20, and only need minor($5) parts to complete.Their datasheets have schematics and alot of info too.

There's another option here : http://www.andywhittaker.com/ecu/obdii_hardware.htm

Plus there's also ALDL hardware (including some DIY circuits), if you have an older, non-OBDII car that you can decode.

ElmScan OBD-II interfaces

Updating an old (but nonetheless popular) post.

Today, it is safe to say that ElmScan and other ELM32x-compatible interfaces have pretty much won the OBD-II interface war. They are by far the least expensive kind, and are supported by a host of diagnostic software.

They are the only kind of OBD-II interface offered for sale by the MP3Car store

j1962 to 9pin dsub. I have one on order. I thought I could get the j1962 connector at a local electronics vendor but they didn't have them. The board is sitting here ready to go, I should have the cable on Monday. I will test it and post results as soon as it gets in.

Yeah these are not only unreliable but they do not support the advanced features such as

1. Ability to request a single response from the ECU - this increases the response speed of the interface

2. Ability to upgrade the firmware remotely - No possibility to get enhaced features when they are release.

3. Baud rates higher than 115K or 500K

Thanks
Paul

I have one from OBDPros and it works great. Tech support has also been very good.

i having a mitsubishi triton,

i removed the RV meter which can show the fuel consumption, the average km/L. L/KM and how much fuel left in the tank, which OBD II is more suitable?

is that all the adapter is the same? the most important is the software?
