Speaking as someone who has actually been developing software that works with OBDII, I would like to very highly recommend the OBDPros device. It's easily the fastest of the devices I have tried, the documentation is excellent, and it "magically Just Works".

Last time I checked, the datasheet was way out of date.
And, have you actually been able to get updates for your device? This is one of the big selling points for OBDPros, but neither the website nor the CD has an update utility.

I second what chunkyks says about the OBDPros device, it does indeed "just work" and is also faster than a couple other devices I've tried.
As for the auto-update, once Paul actually comes out with updates (as the new chip that provides the update ability IS the most up to date atm iirc) I'm sure he will release an update utility.

Only the most recent version supports updates using a utility; presumably since there are no updates yet, no tools exist to run the updates.
The datasheet is up to date enough for me to use it. It may be missing the odd thing [such as the protocol to blast new firmware], but I don't anticipate needing that anytime soon.

On what kind of vehicle/protocol? Which software were you using for testing?

2002 Mazda Protege, ISO-1941-1(or 2, don't recall exactly) and I tried digitmoto, wOBD, and my own program. I also hear it's faster with CAN , but I can't attest to that personally.

That is our plan, currently all the interfaces we ship are programmed using the reflash utility, we decided not to release it at the moment for a couple of reasons
1. The latest version of the firmware is already on the device so the firmware upgrade would not do much :-)
2. No point in giving our competition an advanced insight on how we have implemented the firmware upgrade process
3. To ensure some degree of confidentiality even when we release new firmware our plan is to release it to only our customers via a secured section on our site rather than post it for the public.
Thanks
Paul

Paul, what about releasing the source code for our software, that you modified, and put on your installation CD? We released it under GPL, so you are free to distribute it and even sell it, but you have to make the source code available (including the changes you've made to it).
Also, please put ScanTool.net copyright string back in the program. Replacing our copyright string with yours, is a clear violation of the GPL.

That is a matter for court not these forums. If that was really true you would take legal action rather than trying to discredit him here. That has nothing to do with the topic at hand so why even bring it up if not as a cheap shot.

We have the source on the CD but will double check to make sure it is the latest build.
I will make sure the appropriate copyrights are there if any are missing.
Thanks

Paul,
Thank you for looking into the matter. To address malcom's concerns, I'm attaching a few screenshots. As you can see, there's no sign of the source code anywhere, and our copyright notice is replaced with "OBDPros LLC".
In addition, EasyObdii software clearly states that it is only to be used with ScanTool.net scan tools. Unless you asked for their permission, I reckon you're violating their copyright, too.
Vitaliy
P.S. The order was received from OBDPros very recently, so it's not a matter of an "old build".

Vitaliy,
I have looked into the issues you have raised and I have made the changes you have requested
1. Added the source and copyright info on the OBDPro scanner program
2. Removed Easy OBDII software from our CD - did not realize that even the free version was restricted to ELMScan - thanks for bringing that to my attention
Thanks
Paul

Paul,
Thank you. If you don't mind me asking, what is your role at OBDPros LLC?

I got an OBDPro (USB interface) about a year ago, and a bit later I received a firmware update to the current 1.3 version via an email attachment.
You simply plug everything in, power it up, and unzip and run an exe file - it walks you through the process, and in a couple minutes the new firmware is installed. There is no separate update utility, the entire process is coded into the executable. Worked perfectly on the first try.

Thanks for sharing. OBDLink CI's bootloader works in a similar way. We'll post it on our website as soon as the first update (which includes enhanced GM functionality) is out.
