When you say cable, I guess you mean the whole unit. Cause the cable's are interchangable I think, but the chip in the reader has to be the right type. I really don't know for sure though. I'm very new to all of this myself.

Toyotas use the ISO standard, just as your VW/Audi cars. It will work.
What software do you plan to use?
I don't believe your VAG-Com software will all that useful for your toyota, as it was specifically written to interface to modules in your VW, but any generic OBD reader software should work for you.

sweet.. thanks jason.
the reason why i was asking is because a friend of mine has vag-com, and i'd like to borrow his cable to see if my car is all good. (it can throw codes w/out triggering check engine light) so, yeah... at 50k miles, i just want the piece of mind that my baby is a-ok.
as far as software, who knows... i'll probably sit in my garage and download a crapload of them, and choose which i like the best

Off hand, do you know if he built his own interface cable/hardware, or if he purchased one from ross-tech when he bought the VAG-Com?
If he bought it from Ross-Tech, it will work as long as it's one of the serial cables...
ie: the twin-com or hex-com.
The Ross-Tech USB cables will NOT work with any application other than the VAG-Com one. They communicates USB via a microprocessor and custom windows driver.
If homebuilt, almost any serial ISO cable/interface should work for you.
Hope this helps.
