I know that all 1996 and newer cars are supposed to have OBD II, but Im not sure if that applies in europe. I also know that all of the ports have to be within 2 (i think) feet of the steering wheel, and labeled. Your manual should describe the location if you have one in the car.
There is some info here: http://www.obdii.com/connector.html but it looks like the rule was only for US.

Does anyone know if the 1988 Toyota Corolla FX has ODB-I or ODB-II? Where would I check?

88 Corolla will have ODB-I.
In US, only 96+ cars are required to have ODB II. Period. ODB III is in post deveploment stage and last time I heard, they are going to deploy that by 2006.

1. What year is it?
2. Is it in the US?
3. If you look around the driver side (often times, it's hidden), do you see a connector that looks like this?:

Cant do much while the engine is running with mecs as far as I know. Let me rephrase. You can read what has happened as far as codes, or put into a test mode while running, but it is not like obd-2. Obd-2 is a real time type system, whereas you cant really monitor pids (paremeter identification), or look at real time info on earlier systems. I am going off of the mecs systems that are used on the Probe, a close cousin, with Ford diagnostics (NGS). Someone with a mecs scan tool may be able to provide more info, but from a "I know what works on a 89 probe" standpoint, it wont get you very far in looking into anything but trouble codes.
