OBD1 - Options & Solutions Please !!

Hi There,

Curently running a 1992 Honda Civic VTi VTEC which is OBD1 not OBD2 which came in during 1996.

I am now in the final stages of my CarPC (Finishing tomorrow) and would like to interface my ECU with the PC.

I have contacted Hondata (Honda ECU Specialist's) and have been told that it would cost around £200 to have my ECU converted for DataLogging...Which I think is taking the Pi$$..

What other solution's are there in order for me to View basically what is going on in my Car's brain without spending 100's or pounds on ECU conversions.

All I want to do is the be able to datalog whats going on, I don't want to adjust anything as this will be done in the new year when a Vortex Supercharger is being fitted.

Info on OBD2 can be found here but nothing about OBD1....

Any Help would be great.

OBD-II is standardized(at least the software layer is), OBD is not.You are not likely to find any info on OBD, since different manufacturers use their own protocols, and are not likely to let info on them go public.Alot of OBD vehicles aren't even capable of streaming data out of the ECU, their diagnostic capabilities are limited to flashing lights corresponding to stored codes.Various projects around the net have dissected some OEM ecu's and learned their protocols, but the list is short.

I also have OBD1 in my 94 Integra. Sucks because I too would like datalogging. I am not going this route, but if any of you are interested let me know, because I have a good friend off of the Honda-Tech.com forum that can convert your OBD1-OBD2, only problem is that when emissions comes, more info is displayed to emissions people about your engine, thus making it less likely to pass emissions, especially if you are running any kind of turbo or supercharger setup. Anyway, let me know.

Just found that Hondata do Datalogging but at a cost. They wanted £155 just to enable it but if you have a Honda running OBD1 and also have Hondata you can get this enabled much easier.

Not much help I'm affraid if you don't drive a Honda.

Probs with running OBD2 with an OBD1 car is that (Mainly Honda) you are unable to have much ECU work done to tune the motor on OBD2. Currently people with OBD2 ecu's are going to OBD1 setups because they are much more flexible.

Some ROM's to download and put onto your ECU to allow datalogging.

Also if you search www.pgmfi.org you will find a program called cuddle which is similar to ecucontrol but looks a lot better.

If you need someone to burn you a ROM or sort out your ECU ready for this, I have a few spare and a burner.

Then I bought a ROM burner and a soldering iron.

guys check out www.autoxray.com ... it does OBD1 ... google autoxray and you'll find it everywhere. its also all over ebay

how do we know if we have a OBD port on an older car??

I have a toyota corolla 1990 and have no clue about a OBD port, but I know the garage wants me to pay 60$ to connect to the onboard system of my engine for verifications... lol

I guess I have some sort of data access port, but I don't know what it would be.

is there a way for me to find out?

I have obd1 on my 350 chevy. I was able to connect up for under $100, less if you like to collect parts and solder. Software is free. My ECU has a flash programmable eprom. I have one tune for milage and one for power. I can data log and read trouble codes. There's a cool virtual gauge program available too.

All it took was a few nights of digging through the internet. google seems to have really gone to ***** recently. They changed their engine a few months ago, now it real easy to find places to buy stuff but it's real hard to find places with info on how to make your own. they sold out. I use dogpile and yahoo when google lets me down.

how bout some links to start us out? i've spent much time on google etc to no avail.
