Aftermarket ECU

Has anybody tried to integrate an aftermarket ECU ?? Like Power FC, Haltech, or AEM ??

I Personally have an AEM, take a look at www.aempower.com you can even DL the software, and check it out, you can make custum dashboards which can read ANY sensor plugged into the ecu, for my RX-7 this would even mean things like Air Fuel Ratios, Traction Controll, Intake Air Temp, RPM, Knock Sensors Etc etc... list gos on and on... I don't see why it wouldn't work, I specifically bought the EPIA 10000 board due to its serial port, since the AEM doesn't play well with USB/Serial adaptors... and the software is written for Win2K or up.... now given it's no $200 plug or anything, it's a complete stand alone ECU, $1300.00 but when you're extractiong serious HP from a car as fragile as a 3'rd Gen RX-7 you want the best or close to it... Haltech or Motech are concidered some of the best but are also still DOS based

there's a plethora (man I love that word) of information on various tools/hardware/software for getting information in and out of the car computer on this forum. there are even some solutions for under $200...

P.S.
but i don't think anyone's gone as far as you

I don't see why it wouldn't work

If the software is already supplied then just go for it...I cant see it not working either

Just wondering...whats good about this AEM? it still uses the same sensors from your car. What can it do and the others cant considering its asking price, I though all of them can extract the same info anyway The only way I can see the price being alot is they supply the whole ECU...do you really need to replace it just to find the info you want...why not just OBDII it?

Oh because a stock Rx-7 gets ~200 HP to the wheels, and mine is supposed to get ~370 ~400 Hp to the weels, and for that I need to increase airflow (Porting) and Fuel Pulse Timing... and I do need to be able to send it data based on what it's reading and it needs to work regradless of weather the carputer is on... or not... it'm more in it for -> I needed to buy it for mechanical reasons, and I chose a platform that had software for win 98+ written ,and now I'm integrating it into the CarPuter... not the other way around...

Yeah, he's not going with a standalone Engine Management System so that he can display gauges, he's going to be able to display gauges because he is going with a standalone EMS...noone in their right minds would put an AEM on a stock car just to show oil pressure...it is a tuning tool, espcially useful for boosted or finicky cars, to keep your engine from detonating under high loads and making way more HP than the manufacturer intended.

And I don't know about AEM specifically, but it can probably control cool goodies like RPM-sensitive water injection, intercooler sprayers, 'nawws' and the like, too

No you're right, the engine management system is for a purpose, to tune the car, and make it do things mazda never intended and the EPA would never allow.. Part of the Car-Puter idea, came from the notion, that I needed something to run the ecu on, and my laptop is showing age, and I can't keep looking over to it all the time @ the track to see vital engine stats... so I decided the car puter was a good solution with some added benefits

Hi im also in the same situation as you.
I have had a carputor built so i can display and change the settings on my AEM without having to plug my laptop in every time.
The only problem i have now is i need a larger user friendly interface consisting of Boost,Traction Control, and fuel maps.
Have you had any luck?
Steve.
