OBD II Interface with Software

Does anyone know if the interface between the converter box and the serial/USB port is standard? What I was wondering is that if I buy a cable set and converter box from one company, can I use that same cable and converter box with another company's software package?

For the most part, NO. Almost all OBD-II hardware are propriatary. They must use their own software. The only one that I know of is the http://www.scantool.net They list several different links to other softwares that'll work with their scanner.
