OBD-II Type in Jaguar X-Type

Hey,

I just read a lot of the OBD-II topics here on the forum, but I didn't really find what I was looking for. I've been searching the internet for a few days now to find what type of OBD-II connector is used in my Jaguar X-Type Sport. The car is from 2003.

I think it is ISO (because Jaguar is a european brand), but because Jaguar is a Ford company since a few years it could also be PWM ?

Can someone help me out before I buy my scantool ?
I want to be sure ...

It's partly a Ford Mondeo underneath, so it is likely to be PWM. However most fords from 2003 onwards are CAN only.

J1850 PWM Ford models to 2003 with EEC-V engine management system, this includes:
Ford Cougar (all UK models), Ford Puma (1.6 and 1.7), Ford Fiesta Zetec models to 2003, Ford Mondeo Zetec models to 2003, Ford Focus to 2003
(and the newer Ford-based Jaguars, e.g. S-Type and X-Type)

I would check first though. I'm in the UK and phoned up gendan.co.uk where they checked my VIN

I just had a PWM tool for my Ford Transit, it did not work, but when I tested it on my Jaguar Xtype it worked. I hope this can help you.

So you actually tested with a PWM Tool on a Jaguar X-Type and it worked ? Ofcourse that helps

Could you also tell me what scantool you have and what software you used ? I'm looking at the modules from scantool.net, but I have no experience with this things at all !

So maybe this extra question, where did you buy your scantool ?

Hey again ...

I ordered a PWM version of the scantool and received it today, but it doesn't seems to be working. Maybe someone can give me a bit of advice on what is going wrong.

I connected the scantool to the car, turned the ignition on, the led's on the scantool started to blink and connected the RS232 to my laptop with a USB2COM convertor.

Then used hyperterminal to connect to it. The ATZ command returned the ELM version (ELM 320 V2), but all the other commands (like 0100) returns "NO DATA"...

Any idea's ?

I'm pretty sure the USB convertor is fine, I get responses just fine. Only the content is ... useless.

Maybe my car is ISO after all ?

Just by looking at the connector in your car with a flashlight might tell you which pins are connected. You should really just see 4 metal objects in there even tho 16 can fit. If you can't tell, you can try to remove panels to get to it and see where the 4 wires connect.

Honestly it will NOT be ISO

As I originally said most 2003 onwards are CAN ONLY this is what I was told when I ordered mine for my Euro ford which uses the same line of ECU as the mondeo Jag, they had to check my VIN number to make sure it wasnt actually a 2003-year model car even though it was registered 2003 as that is when ford switch.

If you dont believe me go ahead and try ISO. If you want phone the guys at www.gendan.co.uk I bet they say the same thing. If they say ISO then i'll eat my hat

Sorry, I assumed that you meant to check if it's ISO - in response to his question which you were answering:

Checking the production number of my car it tells me it is manufactured in 2002 and sold in 2003 (January). So it will probably not CAN ... and do CAN-cars have OBD-II connectors ? I don't know anything about CAN

...

Next I checked the pins with a flash-lite and the pins I have are :
2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 14 and 16 (That more then 4

) and these pins would again tell me it's PWM.

So it should be PWM, but I'm not getting any data :/
Strange that I can see the lights blinking, they don't stop until I disconnect the scantool from the OBD-II port.

But I also tried with the free program from ScanTool.net and it's keeps telling me to turn the ignition on ...

I'll try with the spaces first

You said an LED flashes (which I think is based on data being sensed on the car side) Plus there is a 2nd light in there that is on all the time, right?

And the software detects that the elm is there but can't get data.

Do you live in the US? Autozones have a free diagnostics check if you bring the car there. They can hook it up and see if theirs works. If it does, they may even be able to see what type of connection is required. It seems so unlikely your scan tool is malfunctioning.

I have 3 leds in there.
- A Green for power (always on when ignition on)
- A yellow and red for data on the OBD-II port and they keep blinking (when the ignition is on)

And I live in belgium ... :/

I didn't try other commands (only clicked all the buttons in the scantool program ...). I'll try the MA command tommorow, it's already 22h12 in the evening over here
