Question Is scantool really necessary?

Ok, to get OBD-II information we need a scantool (or something similiar), that connects to the computer and to the connector in the car. As I see it the scantools are basically just specialised computers that perform a task.

Now instead of having the scantool do the processing, isn't there a way to connect directly from the car to the compuer, maybe some sort of DIY connector, and have some piece of software to do all the reading.

I don't pretend to understand all this stuff but isn't the OBD-II port just sending and maybe receiving information, and all we need to do is read it. Unless there are some electrical issues that I don't know about, like having to use resistor and capacitor (IC stuff, btw don't know anything about electrronics).

Oh and if this is all crap then tell me , its just been going round in my head and kind of bugging me right now. I'd love to here your thoughts on this.

The product from www.scantool.net is available as a DIY kit for people thinking the same as you - it's probably the closest you'll get to what you are looking for remember you do need isolation between the ECU and the PC for safety reasons
