Is this the same as:

ISO 15031-5:2006
Road vehicles - Communication between vehicle and external equipment for emissions-related diagnostics - Part 5: Emissions-related diagnostic services

Sorry about the questions, I'm new to this ISO stuff.

It's pretty similar -- ISO and SAE are parallel but competing organizations. The most recent version of SAE J1979 is supposed to be 'technically equivalent' to ISO 15031-5. The stereotypical difference is that America cites SAE documents in legislation, while Euorpe cites ISO documents.

Also, there's a huge difference in price. SAE J1979 goes for around $50, but google tells me that ISO 15031-5 at CHF 236 is $189. Ouch!!!!

If you're buying documents, the SAE HS-3000 book is usually the best deal. It includes all of the automotive related standards in one book for around $200.

Bump Bump

Did you ever find out anything?
Looking to sniif out the can bus on my 06 golf which will lead hopefully to writing msgs to the DIS. Initially via a PC interface (debug PIC software), and finally via PIC controller (I want a BIG gear selected indicator on DIS for the DSG box)

Any help appreciated...

Has anyone actually logged messages from the CAN interface from a 2006 VW golf? I thought that their CAN implementation was priority and a bit different than normal.

Does the CANUSB http://www.dontronics-shop.com/produ...1&cat=0&page=1 interface work?

I just want to make sure before forking out $230 hard earned. (I have purchased devices in the past that have not worked)

Also would this device have to be connected from behind the stereo as opposed to the diagnostics port? I think the diagnostics port is only for diagnostics and the cars communication is not on it.

MARIO,
Vag-Com is the only software that will want for your car. It emulates the dealer software and then some. I have a 2006 Jetta GLI. I use this software to change the factory default settings and to monitor faults.

Most probably, the is a connection CAN-H & CAN-L at the rear of the radio. From what I've found from trawling theee net, the diagnostics bus is separate from the Driver Information BUS. I found a thread a while back, the a guy managed to hook up a National Instruments? can i/f unit to his A4 bus and snooped the codes for reading writing to the DIS, lights on/off, windows up/down. Alarm set/reset etc.

This link details a similar i/f for alarm systems, but of no use to me...

I have the VAG-COM tool....

the problem is there is no interface for the device.
They are communicating with it via "VAGUSB.dll"

Intresting thing is if you go properties on this file you get
Product Name: FTDI FTD2XX Drivers

I wish i could use this tool with the source provided by CANUSB.

They must the very simmilar.
