Unhappy VW Golf TDi MK4 2002 ODB cable confusion - which one is the right cable?

Hi,
I've a VW Golf TDi 2002 Mk4 (UK) and have purchased 2 different cables for this car. Neither cable works - all fine on the PC end - cables configured all OK.

Car is OK as a commercial tester unit plugged into the ODB socket worked fine. The tester had 2 different cables - one cable was marked ODBII - this worked fine - the other cable was marked CANBUS - this DIDN'T work - even though both cables have the same connector on the end. I thought ODB/CANBUS was the same, but it seems there's different flavours - all of which are incompatible with eachother

The two cables I've purchased are shown here:

I've tried all manner of software packages. Once I can get something to talk to the car, I'll be in business. But all software VAG-COM, etc, all report that there is a problem talking to the car. So I'm quite convinced its a cabling issue.

I'd buy the right cable, but I don't know what I should be buying. The seller of one of these cables even confirmed that the cable he was selling WAS compatible with my make / model of car!!!

Does anyone have any idea which cable I should buy and from where? I'm in the UK, but am happy to do overseas mail order if required. It seems a black art as to which cable is correct.

What's the difference between CANBUS and ODBII with regards to a 2002 VW Golf TDi MK4? I thought they were all the same....

Confuddled.....

Thanks for reading this.... If you can shed any light on this I'll email you a beer!

Do you require a USB connection? Perhaps that's part of the problem.

I have a serial OBDII cable I used with my MKIV Jetta TDI, however, only vag-com ever worked. I was never able to get it to work with any other OBD2 software and that got me to playing around with VagScope to make nicer looking gauges, fuel economy calcs, etc.

As I now also have a hexcom cable from Ross-Tech I don't really need my older serial cable. If the serial port is fine with you we could work out the shipping charges + maybe $5 for a beer and I can send it on it's merry way to the UK (from Chicago,IL)

Great to see a fellow TDI'er on these forums - saw your post on TDIClub as well - cheers!

Hi,
yes, would be more than happy to buy the cable off you.
Payment with Paypal is always the easiest. Any good?

If so, send an email to phil@kajagoogoo.co.uk

Cheers

Hi,

This may be a little late for you, but it may help someone else.
I saw this page while looking for a solution to the same problem.

I have the same cable (the cheap one off ebay) and I have a Golf Estate MK4 TDI 2000 (w reg). I used Ross-Tech v409.1 as recommended. The software found the controller on COM3, but refused to connect to the car.

Eventually I solved the problem by looking in the control panel for the device which was installed as a serial port, but on COM18. The software only accepts COM1 to 4 and USB, so I changed the device port to use COM2 (COM3 turned out to be my laptops internal modem).
This solved my problem and the software actually found the device and recognised it as a Ross-Tech product.

Hope this helps someone
