I'm test fitting the 7" LCD in the dash cluster. There are a couple ways I could go. I could hack up the cluster and fit the screen right over the gauges. I would have to chop a hole out of the top and hope I can still make it fit in the dash. Or I could mount the screen on the outside glass and then I could still utilize the touchscreen and wouldn't have to hack up anything.
Suggestions?

There's no way you could utilise the touchscreen anyway, what with the steering wheel being in the way and everything! Unless you have a second elbow on the arm you intend to use, of course. Therefore I'd suggest hacking the gauge holes so that your screen is flush with the fuel and temp gauges, otherwise the rake of the glass (it's angled, isn't it?) will give you vision problems as well.

Nice idea though!

Yes it is angled but I tested the screen and it is just as visible from that angle. It might be great for shielding it from the sun too since I drive a convertible. I agree about the touchscreen, it will add unnecessary glare and it's hard to reach. I would like to instead hook up a steering wheel button to switch modes using my ibus module whenever it shows up.
I don't think I can make any clearance in the dash on top so the only way I can fit the screen flush is to cover up the digital display on the bottom which I don't want to do unless I can recreate it on the LCD.

I made a photoshop mock up of my speedo I hope to reproduce in DashXL. It might be a little busy but it combines rpm and speed in a single gauge. I will be keeping my physical gas gauge and trip computer hopefully.

Got my elm327 OBDII module today. That was fast!
The only problem I foresee now is software. I'm been looking into DashXL more and doesn't support any of the scripts like pcmscan does. I need scripts if it's going to display anything more than the pids that the car puts out. So that means no mpg or miles of fuel remaining or any of that cool stuff. Pcmscan supports this stuff but it's DashXL implementation doesn't go fully fullscreen. It leaves the tabs and menu icons remaining. I could always crop this off somehow I guess.
The other problem is DashXL only supports one screen of info so I'm stuck with one display. This kind of takes away the whole functionality advantage of having a digital dash. If I can only display the same stuff that my car already does than what's the point other than looking cool? Although pcmscan on the other hand supports multiple tabs of info but switching between them requires clicking on the tabs.

I guess being able to view a nightvision camera in the dash might make it still worth it.
