ELM 323 or 327?

Hi,
I have bought a tactrix cable for readim my Subaru ECU and have had success with ECUExplorer and ECUFlash.

Now I am looking to integrate some gauges into RR and most of the software with fancy dash screens seem to be based around the ELM cables.

Having looked at these, would I be better going for a 323 or a 327? What is the main difference (other than price!)

Any help would be much appreciated.

323 only supports the ISO protocol, 327 supports five different protocols. It depends if you plan on using it only for the ISO line of cars or if you plan on using it on all different types of cars. If you just plan on using it on our own vehicle, 323 is fine.

The 327 based devices can also connect at higher speeds to the PC so you get a better throughput when reading sensors. The 323 can only connect at 9.6KBPS

For instance the OBDPro will be able to connect at 9.6KBPS to 128KBPS. The ELMScan supports 9.6 and 38.4 KBPS

Thanks. It will only be used for my Subaru so not worried about the protocols.

However, speed would be an issue as I obviously would like to read at the fastest rate possible. Will this depend on the software? Was planning to use on digimoto or Proscan?

Yes the software needs to be capable of supporting the higher speeds. I know Digimoto allows user to configure the baudrate on the connection, so that would be a better choice in that regards, not sure if proscan supports all speeds or limits one to 9600 & 38400 (These are the only two speeds supported by the ELM327 chipset, whereas OBDPro supports all speeds 9600 - 128000)

Joel was going to add a way that would automatically configure the OBDPro for the higher speeds not sure if he has done that.

Regardless you should be able to connect at the higher speeds by first configuring the interface and then connecting at the higher speeds via the Digimoto configuration.

You can manually set higher speeds within Digimoto now, but we do not currently have our AutoDetect feature scan for higher baud rates (the two most common rates right now are 9600 and 38400, which is what we scan for on the AutoDetect). We can make this change for your interface Paul.
