Static discharge between motherboard and carpet

Hi all,

Just getting into the fitout of my motherboard into the centre console of my '04 Mazda Tribute, and just wondering about static issues.

I will be mounting an Intel atom board to a piece of 3mm MDF using bolts through the mdf up into the mounting holes on the board.

But I don't have a lot of vertical space in the console, so I was thinking of using velcro strips on the underside of the mdf to stick it all into place on the carpet (The carpet in the Tribute runs all the way up under the centre console, so there is no bare metal there).

The carpet is the usual automotive acrylic, and the mounting bolts would probably be in close contact with the carpet fibres.

Would I have to worry about static buildup killing the motherboard? Would it be worth covering the heads of the bolts where they stick out the bottom, or would the grounding of the motherboard back through the power supply keep the risk of static discharge low enough not to worry?

I mounted my mobo about 1/2" above acrylic carpet for years, no case. Never had a problem with static.

As long as you ground your mobo well, you should be okay. Of course, I don't guarantee that but *I* wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

Awesome, in that case I might put a grounding strip between each of the mounting holes in the motherboard, and ground those direct to the chassis, should help keep things safe there.

Time to do some cuttin'!!!!

Sounds good. Do you have a worklog? I would be interested to see your progress. I am working on mounting my MOBO in my center console as well...must wasted space.

All the grounding posts om your motherboard is connected to a single layer insinde your motherboard PCB (they can consist of 8 layers or more, and a single one, or two is dedicated to grounds) so connecting a wire between the posts would be senseless.

No worklog as yet, as two of the parts I need to save a bit more cash for (HQCT and Centrafuse license), but once those are ordered I will start up a worklog, and get things up on there.

The upshot of the Tribute centre consoles is they come out of the car in the space of about 4 bolts, and there is a massive gap underneath them, as long as you can keep the handbrake cable clear, as it is metal shrouded *grin*
